Most people never get the chance to know who turkeys really are. 🩃

They’re often reduced to a holiday centerpiece, but the truth is they’re intelligent, emotional, social animals with unique personalities.

Turkeys communicate using dozens of different sounds, form lasting friendships, nurture their babies with incredible care, and even experience REM sleep—the stage associated with dreaming.

At sanctuaries like Aloha Animal Sanctuary, rescued turkeys finally get the chance to do what every animal deserves: live freely, build relationships, explore, and simply be themselves.

The next time you see a turkey, try seeing an individual instead of a tradition.

Because once you get to know them
it’s impossible not to love them. 💚

A heartfelt mahalo to Dr. Gabrielle Asay of Paniolo Livestock Services and Yun Bustamante, UH Livestock Extension Agent, for spending time with us and sharing their knowledge recently!

Their visit focused on helping us create the healthiest, safest, and most enriching environment possible for our residents. From pasture rotation and land management strategies to improving drainage systems and preventing future flooding, their guidance will help us better care for the goats, sheep, pigs, and other animals who call Aloha Animal Sanctuary home. đŸ·đŸđŸ‘ 🐓 🩆

They also provided valuable resources, recommendations, and practical tools to help us make the most of our land while supporting the long-term health and wellbeing of our residents.

We are incredibly grateful for their generosity, expertise, and commitment to improving the lives of farmed animals throughout Hawaiʻi.

Please join us in thanking Dr. Asay and Yun for helping us give our rescued residents the best lives possible! đŸŒș

Aloha everyone

We’re excited to announce that Aloha Animal Sanctuary will be hosting a fundraising concert at CafĂ© Kopi in Kailua on Saturday evening, August 22nd!

Our headliners will be Melaniie + JRoQ (half of Simple Souls), who bring fun, soulful, and intentional energy through their vocals and performances. Their music takes audiences on a journey from the 60s to today, with a special focus on 90s and 2000s R&B, pop, and hip hop.

Tickets are now available on our website! We would greatly appreciate you helping spread the word by sharing the event with friends and family.

Aloha Animal Sanctuary is O'ahu's First 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Sanctuary for Farmed Animals

THE SANCTUARY was founded by a team of animal rights activists who recognized there was a need for a sanctuary for farmed animals on O'ahu. Many people have never had the chance to interact with animals like pigs, cows, chickens, or turkeys, although we slaughter and eat them by the billions annually. We want to help people form personal connections with these animals, and see them for the individuals that they are.

đŸŒș Aloha Rescue Tales: Meet Anna 💕

Anna’s life could have turned out very differently.
She and her sanctuary sister, Elsa, came from a local goat dairy farm. Like cows used for dairy, goats must give birth in order to produce milk. Their value is often measured by how much milk they can provide.

But Anna was different.

She was the runt of the herd and wasn’t expected to produce as much milk as the other goats. Because of that, she was going to be sold for meat.
Thankfully, Anna was given a second chance and found her way to the sanctuary, where she could stay with her sister and live the life she always deserved. ❀

Today, Anna is thriving—and she’s become one of the biggest cuddle bugs you’ll ever meet. She loves affection and has earned the title of “lap goat” because she’ll find any way possible to snuggle up close to her favorite humans. đŸ„č

In the dairy industry, animals are often valued for what they can produce. At the sanctuary, we believe every animal has inherent worth simply because they are someone, not something.

And if you’ve ever met Anna, you’d know she’s worth far more than any amount of milk. 💕

Think goats are just farm animals? Think again. ❀

Goats are playful, intelligent, affectionate, and incredibly social. They build friendships, recognize the voices of their babies, enjoy being loved, and each has a personality all their own.

The biggest difference between a goat and the dog sleeping on your couch isn’t who they are

it’s simply how our society has chosen to see them.

At Aloha Animal Sanctuary, our goats get to live the lives they always deserved—surrounded by friends, family, safety, and love.

We hope these fun facts help you see them the way we do: as individuals with emotions, relationships, and lives that matter.

💜 Which goat fact surprised you the most?

đŸŒșMeet Daisy 🐑

Did you notice the tiny heart on Daisy’s nose? đŸ„č It couldn’t suit her better.

Daisy came to Aloha Animal Sanctuary alongside her brother, HoÊ»Ćla, their mom Fae, and their aunty Iris after being rescued from a local petting zoo where sheep were also sold for meat.

When Daisy and her brother were less than a week old, it became clear they weren’t getting the nourishment they needed. Thankfully, their caregivers reached out for help, and our volunteers stepped in.

For Daisy’s first week, she was syringe-fed around the clock. Then, for the next couple of months, our Director Amy cared for her day and night—keeping her warm in tiny onesies, changing her diapers, and even sleeping on the floor beside her so she would never feel alone. ❀

Today, Daisy is thriving! She’s playful, curious, and full of personality. She’s also completely devoted to her brother HoÊ»Ćla. If he wanders too far away, she’ll let everyone know until they’re reunited again. Together, they spend their days exploring the sanctuary, bouncing around with endless joy, and reminding us just how deep the bonds between animals truly are.

Every rescued animal has a story.

This is Daisy’s
and we’re so grateful it has a happy ending. đŸŒș

A huge mahalo to Sophia for spending the past three weeks interning with us at Aloha Animal Sanctuary! 💚

Sophia first discovered our sanctuary through a coworker and quickly fell in love with our mission. When she needed a volunteer placement for her high school’s final project, she chose to join us—and what started as a school requirement became something much more meaningful.

During her time here, she helped care for many of our rescued residents, formed special bonds with both the animals and our team, and learned to understand the unique personalities and behaviors of pigs, sheep, turkeys, ducks, and more.

In Sophia’s own words:

“This experience taught me responsibility, compassion, and animal care skills. Although I hadn’t planned on staying after my volunteer requirement ended, I fell in love with the work after just one week. I truly believe in the sanctuary’s mission and look forward to continuing to support it however I can.” ❀

We’re so grateful to have been part of your journey, Sophia. Thank you for your kindness, dedication, and willingness to learn. The animals were lucky to have you—and we can’t wait to see all the amazing things you’ll do in the future.

Interested in volunteering? We’d love to welcome you to the Aloha family! đŸŒș
