Prefer a quiet day on the couch? Sheā€™s perfectly happy staying close and soaking up the snuggles too!

Melon came to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary needing a little extra time and support to feel comfortable with new people. But since then, sheā€™s built lots of confidence and shown everyone just how goofy and affectionate she really is. She loves to play with toys (especially if they are cubed shape) and she really enjoys getting out and exploring. Once youā€™re part of her circle, sheā€™s a total love bug.

Recently a Best Friends team traveled to City of Weslaco - Government, Texas, to train shelter staff and animal services officers on launching a new community cat program. After they arrived they realized 15 cats already in the shelter were eligible to participate, so instead of stopping at training the team helped launch the program on the spot! šŸ±

Working with Weslaco staff and their veterinary partner, all of the cats were spayed or neutered and officers learned the return process, taking each one back to the exact areas where they had been found.

By the end the program had freed up much needed kennel space for more cats and given staff hands-on experience they could keep using long after the training ended. šŸ§”

Getting there took local solutions and a lot of teamwork. Shelters, rescue groups, and community members worked together to save more pets, including vulnerable cats who needed specialized care.

It's a not only a huge milestone but also a reminder that lifesaving doesnā€™t stop here. As Hurricane Isaias makes landfall along the Gulf Coast, Best Friends is working ahead of the storm to help keep pets safe. šŸ§”

Over the past two days weā€™ve moved or helped move 52 dogs and cats from Mobile County Animal Shelter to partners across the Southeast, with more transports planned. Moving these adoptable pets now creates critical space for pets who may become displaced during the storm and helps give them a better chance of being reunited with their families.

Our teams are also staying in close contact with shelters and rescue groups across the impact area and are ready to help as needs arise.
