Halau Na Kipuupuu is coming up on its 20th year of it being under Kumu Micah Kamohoali’i’s tutelage and he had always said that “you need to dance for me for 20 years at least before you can uniki” Well, on this Lā Hoʻihoʻi ʻEa 2023 these 6 indiviuals have gone through weeks of prep, hana and rigorous uniki ceremonies, elevating them to Hoopaa. Congratulations to those that made it! May the life long learning always continue for you all into every aspect that is Hawaiian.

We are heading on home! We can’t wait for some poi, poke and laulau. On the road for nearly 2 weeks and what things we had accomplished, whew.

Train ride to New York then JFK to HNL on Hawaiian airlines. We really wish we could stand behind hwn air, but they are so inconsistent!!! And honestly it’s like a game of Russian roulette with them, you never know what your going to get. Ugh 😩

Day 6- Kapa Pounding & Hula Dance, Chants with Hālau Nā Kīpuʻupuʻu

Hailing from Waimea on the island of Hawai‘i, Hālau Nā Kīpuʻupuʻu is a traditional hula school led by Kumu Micah Kamohoalii. The performers will share dance and chanting rooted in Native Hawaiian language and cultural knowledge.

Wauke, also known as paper mulberry (Broussonettia papyrifera), is used throughout Oceania to produce kapa, or clothing. The practice involves stripping the bark of the wauke tree and beating the inner fibers into a bark cloth. Join Kumu Micah and members of Halau Na Kipu‘upu‘u as they demonstrate kapa pounding and share stories of the plant’s origin, its importance throughout the Pacific, and its significance as a multi-generational practice.

Day 5- Behind the Masks / Beyond the Skirt

From colorful lace and beads, to bells, flowers, and feathers, many communities express devotion through regalia. These clothes are as central to practice as the movements, songs, and instrumentation they enhance. Navigating the spaces between belief and cultural identity, members of Bomba Yemayá, Egbe Omo Alairá, Hālau Nā Kīpuʻupuʻu, and Indigenous Enterprise discuss the significance of their regalia, and what it means to don their costumes as practitioners in contemporary and/or urban contexts.

Hālau Nā Kīpuʻupuʻu also share hula and stories about the mountains on Hawai’i island. They dance chants of the Piko of Waiau down to the fire home of Pele.
