August Monthly Grant #2
New England Equine Rescue North, Inc. (NEER)-Massachusetts

After the Finish Line awarded NEER a grant for $2,000 for Little Red Devil who has lameness issues. NEER is requesting funds for a vet evaluation, radiographs, joint and hoof health medication, supplements, and farrier trims/shoes.

NEER North rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes horses, donkeys, and mules in crisis throughout New England (primarily Massachusetts and New Hampshire) providing them with a safe haven from abuse, neglect, and the threat of slaughter. They are dedicated to working closely with horse owners, other rescues, and the community to prevent equine crisis, promote education on equine abuse, and ensure that every rescued animal has the opportunity for a loving, forever home. They also help network and have a feed fund for struggling owners.

Little Red Devil (aka Boo) proved to be too much horse for his owner and was donated to NEER when she was unable to sell him or find him a new home. He was also intermittently lame on his left front foot. He is footsore due to thin soles on both hind feet, he has low heels, and a lateral toe crack. NEER believes they can work with their vet to evaluate and rehab Little Red Devil and find him a wonderful home.

Little Red Devil was bred in New York and foaled in 2013. He is a chestnut gelding that raced from August 2015 – June 2017. He raced at Mountaineer, Mahoning, Gulfstream Park and Gulfstream Park West. In 17 Starts he had 1 First and 1 Third. His total earnings were $15,487.

With his lovely movement his second career options are Hunter/Jumper, low level dressage, and/or pleasure/trail horse.

August Monthly Grant #1
Galloping Out – Illinois

After the Finish Line awarded Galloping Out a grant in the amount of $3,250 for Miss Lainie. This is for her transport from quarantine in Kansas to Illinois, health cert, vet check, farrier, supplements and 3 months of board. She was one of the 24 Thoroughbred broodmares rescued from a kill pen in Texas last June.

Galloping Out is the on-track retirement program for Chicago based thoroughbred racehorses. They have helped the horses retiring from the Illinois racetracks since 2010. They occasionally help their non-racing state bred horses like Miss Lainie when found in bad situations. Galloping Out will continue to assist their horse after the closing of Hawthorne Race Course.

Twenty-four broodmares, including Miss Lainie, escaped the dreadful ride to slaughter. These broodmares were sent to a kill pen by their breeder located in Oklahoma. After being rescued they were sent to a quarantine facility in Kansas. Galloping Out was asked to give Miss Lainie a lifelong home because she was bred in Illinois. Galloping Out already committed to taking the mare Jane Juniur. They asked for grant assistance to be able to take Miss Lainie.

Miss Lainie, a chestnut mare, is an unraced 27-year-old retired broodmare. She produced one registered foal that raced in Chicago. She will be supported by Galloping Out and live in sanctuary at Indian Hills after the trauma of being sent to a kill pen.

July Monthly Grant #2
Kingfisher Equine Rehab and Rehome (KERRI)-CA

After the Finish Line awarded KERRI a grant for 3 Off Track Thoroughbreds in the amount of $4,000. This grant is for 2 Thoroughbred stallions, Fighting Hussar 16y/o and Capital Account 19 y/o, as well as 1 broodmare, Yana 15y/o, that were rescued from Mike’s Auction in Southern California. The horses were transported from the auction and will get radiographs of the feet, farrier work and teeth floating.

Kingfisher Equine Rehab and Rehome, Inc. (KERRI) are setting the standard in Thoroughbred aftercare. Most of their horses come from responsible racing connections that donate to their horse’s care as they move on to their next career. On a case-by-case basis, they intervene in a rescue situation.

Information about each Thoroughbred is posted below with their photo.

In 2020, they expanded their mission by inviting children with autism, those in the juvenile justice system & those in recovery from substance abuse. Their horses help heal the younger generation in their community. The autistic children are given simple tasks to perform at the ranch and they spend time with the horses. Another group of young adults with mental and emotional issues, and often substance abuse problems, are also given tasks to perform before spending time with their favorite horses. The local Juvenile Probation Department brings young teenagers who have been sentenced to perform community service. They are given ranch tasks before learning horsemanship (haltering, leading, grooming, etc.) and interacting with the horses. Their horses are healers.

June Monthly Grant #4
Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare (CTA)-Puerto Rico

After the Finish Line awarded CTA a grant for El Ingles in the amount of $4,035. This will include USDA 7-day quarantine in Puerto Rico, air transport from San Juan to Miami, ground transport from Miami to their layover facility in Ocala, health documentation, including a Coggins test, piroplasmosis test, and health certificate. El Ingles entered quarantine and will fly to Miami on Friday, June 26th.

Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare’s mission is to provide a compassionate and responsible pathway to retirement for Thoroughbred racehorses across the Caribbean. They are the only organization solely dedicated to this cause in the Caribbean. Each year, approximately 500 Thoroughbreds are imported into Puerto Rico to race at Camarero Racetrack, which is home to over 1,300 horses.

El Ingles came to CTA in late August 2024 from a local jockey who had taken him in after his racing career ended at Hipodromo Camarero. Unfortunately, he was being kept chained during the day in the sun and spent nights in a roofless barn with poor stall conditions. He was surrendered to CTA to give him a better quality of life. El Ingles does have some residual issues from the track. He has bone chips in both front knees, chronic capsulitis in his right front fetlock, and the early start of degenerative joint disease in his hocks. El Ingles was rehabbed for months and has been in training at CTA.

El Ingles is a six-year-old gelding that was bred in Puerto Rico. His sire was Flintshire. El Ingles raced from April 2023 – February 2025 at Hipodromo Camarero. In 23 starts he earned $12,444. His race record is Firsts: 2, Seconds: 0 and Thirds: 2.

El Ingles is ready for a low-level career. He enjoys trail riding more than training in an arena.

Why wouldn't I start an Equestrian Club where I now live? 30 members have already joined with more on the way. This is going to be fun! Many different breeds of horses here in Park City. I'm excited to introduce my Off Track Thoroughbred, Order and Law, to the members.

We love his name! Happy to award a May grant to help the Off Track Thoroughbreds at ReRun Thoroughbred Adoption.
