On May 13, the Flathead Valley experienced one of its first major windstorms of the spring, with sustained winds of 15–25 mph and gusts reported near 45 mph. Unfortunately, the storm occurred during the height of nesting season for many birds, including Ospreys.

FAS has more than 30 volunteers monitoring nests throughout the valley. While most nests survived the storm, a few unfortunately did not.

The nest pictured here, monitored by Devin Harshbarger, was located along the Stillwater River. This nest had been active in previous years and had a goose nesting on it throughout April before it was destroyed in the May windstorm.

There is still a chance that Ospreys will rebuild nests that were damaged or destroyed.

As a Taylor Swift fan, I’ve brainstormed how to incorporate my love of her music with birds… here it is folks…Hundreds of Vaux’s Swifts have found a roosting spot in downtown Kalispell ❤️‍🔥

It’s not uncommon for swifts to adapt to use chimneys as a roosting location, especially as old growth forests are destroyed. Swifts require hollow tree snags to safely roost. When no snags are found, the birds find other suitable locations.

Swifts construct small twig nests, carefully glued together with their saliva. There nests do not pose a fire risk and will disinegrate over time.

Thank you Linda DuLac for the footage.

10 days away from Warbler Weekend 🏕️ Do you have it on your calendar yet?

Join us at the Tally Lake Campground May 29-31 for an extraordinary three days of camping and birding!

The campground’s group pavilion will be our central gathering place. There is plenty of space for tents and campers for those who want to spend the night(s). Camping and day use will be FREE, courtesy of FAS. Please bring firewood, if you have it, and camp chairs for sitting around the fire.

Raise your hand if it’s your first time seeing a hummingbird 👋🏼 (So many little hands raised!!)

2nd graders from Edgerton Elementary enjoyed a morning at Somers Beach State Park, observing over 20 bird species, including 2 Calliope Hummingbirds!

I’ve visited dozens of classrooms the past two years and noticed that most students have an innate love for birds. Taking them on field trips to hear and see the birds is the next level to building environmental stewards.

Bringing kids closer to birds and their habitats is one of the main reasons FAS exists. We are so lucky and grateful to have access to the Jean Robocker Farm, a private trail system managed by Elle Eberts-Robocker and her friends and family.

Creston 5th graders explored the Ponderosa forest, learning the trill of the Chipping Sparrow, the many calls of the Red-winged Blackbirds, and the screech of a Red-tailed Hawk. They also identfied traditional food sources such as service berries in blooms, and talked about the use of fire to manage these traditional gathering grounds of the Kalispeh and Ksanka.

Thank you greatly to the Robocker family for sharing their special land with the community.

Meet our newest FAS Field Trip Leader, Sela Hardy!

Sela has been involved in FAS for over a year now and is spreading her wings into leading field trips. Her upcoming trip at the Wild Mile Trail in Bigfork on May 16 still has openings, see the link at the bottom for details.

Sela grew up in Portland, OR and fell in love with birds as a kid! “We used to read through the bird books that played the bird call for birds around the world. We got hooked and we have loved birds ever since!”

Sela is a big fan of the small birds, like chickadees and nuthatches. So much so, she recently got a Red-breasted Nuthatch tattoo!

History Corner: Statewide Birding Festivals

By Linda Winnie and Ben Long Covering 147,000 square miles, Montana spans a vast array of ecosystems from old-growth cedar forests to shortgrass prairie. For 26 years, statewide birding festivals have connected people across this great expanse and have built a joyous tradition across Big Sky Country. The predecessor to the Wings Across the Big Sky Birding Festival was the spring Montana Audubon board meetings, which included talks on conservation topics....

Bird of the Month: Golden Eagle

By Zoey Du Lac, Somers Middle School Student The first time I encountered a Golden Eagle, I was around 11 years old. My family and I were Christmas tree hunting on Blacktail Mountain. We were about halfway through our tree hunt when I spotted a large bird in the trees. We looked and looked but were not quite sure what it was, so I took a cell phone picture and sent it to my Nana, Linda Du Lac....
