The project encompasses 1,272 acres of the roughly 3,000-acre state park, including units around Loon, Horseshoe, Crystal, Upper Thompson and Lower Thompson lakes, according to an environmental assessment released by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
The proposed treatments aim to promote the development of more fire-tolerant ponderosa pine and western larch trees, reduce potentially hazardous wildfire fuels, and promote habitat for elk, deer and other wildlife species.

Paid for by the Land and Water Conservation Fund and purchased by the nonprofit Vital Ground Foundation, the Falls Creek Project protects public recreation access and wildlife movement while restricting development on Savage Lake

🌲 The 160-acre Falls Creek Project — home to a trail leading to one of the area's largest waterfalls, access to the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness, and critical habitat for the Cabinet-Yaak's roughly 50 remaining grizzly bears — has been transferred to the Kootenai National Forest, ensuring public access.
