“Free Drugs.” This is what I heard a voice say to me. Not, “You’re doing good work- keep goin.” Not, “The path is the goal, and the goal IS the path.. Nothin about light or enlightenment. “Free Drugs” was what I heard. Now, for those of you that know me, this message from above, or wherever it was coming from, could definitely cause a real conflict of interest, if ya feel me.
There I was just standing in the check out line at Wally World when this Spiritual Experience took place. Oddly enough -It wasn’t super odd. Cuz, well,.. that’s where most of my Spiritual growth seems to take place.
To keep things really REAL, as we used to say back in tha day, I was replaying it in my head in double time, wondering if what I heard was a question or a statement. Where was the inflection? If it was a question, was it rhetorical? Was it an imperative? Was it exclamatory, like “Eureka!” Look everyone, HERE are some free drugs! I thought- Nahhh! E’ryone knows that when you find drugs, whether they are in a public space, or you stumbled across them in your friend’s jacket, or your neighbor’s medicine cabinet, or…you don’t make an announcement about it. C’mon! It limits your take.
Was it an offer mantra, like the ones the sample ladies shout out at Costco? Was this audible voice an advertisement on a video kiosk or somn?
Where was the inflection? Did it go UP? Did it go down?? The voice continued, and it seemed to be coming from the lady behind me. “I saw you and your wife present at the “Power Your Future” training at the College. By this point my brain is already glitchin-out, and I can’t figure out why. So, there I am tryin to show up, and prolly lookin like the frozen person on your zoom meeting. I can feel myself slowly tuning in. She mentioned that she was a counselor at a Middle School, and that she brought a group of girls from her school. She went on to say that our Workshop landed for them, and that we managed to draw out some girls that have otherwise had a difficult time engaging. She felt that our Theatre games and our QR code link to the “Free Drugs” was awesome. She appreciated our playful approach, and was happy to see that we were on the same page with teaching our youth how to make, generate, and earn as many free drugs as possible. As the techniques that we encourage, can very often prevent the pain that some of the more dangerous ones can cost them and their families.
At the beginning of the workshop, we had stamped the girls’ hands with random stamps that we had in our craft supplies. Throughout our time with them, we said nothing about the stamps, as it was a social experiment to cause a little added stress. We made sure to stamp girls that entered together, with different stamps to create a level of uncertainty as to who would be grouped together. At end of the workshop we subtly mentioned to each group as they were leaving the theatre: “Scan the QR code on the way out if you want to know why your hand was stamped, or if you wanna know how to get some free drugs, byeeee thx for being a great group!” The link connected them to one of our webpages that explained how some fears can protect us and many can prevent us from good, and waste a lot of our time.
The chemicals (the drugs that we were referring to) were “Dope”amine, (dopamine) Endorphins, Serotonin, and Oxytocin. We were simply teaching them that they can be their own “Plug.” (hope dealer) and that these reactions can almost always be free, and reproducible. It’s what we wanted to offer them as take-aways. They were now equipped with reference points, as they had activated them all during our experientials at the workshop..
On a day when my morning consisted of beating myself up over my own fears (false evidence appearing real) and ruminating in self doubt about the work that we are doing in our commUNITY, wondering if we’re even making a difference, an Angel spoke to me. And by angel, of course I mean, a lady at Wally World; a very kind and generous youth counselor, who SAW us, and had the heart to express it.
Thank you JP.
