✨ Accommodation Spotlight: Sarah!

For National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), DNSWM staff are sharing what kinds of workplace accommodations help us show up as our best selves.

Sarah’s accommodation is getting written instructions when there are new policies or procedures. Having the information in writing helps her remember the details and gives her something to refer back to, if needed.

And as Sarah points out, those clear instructions can be helpful for other staff members and when training someone new, too!

Sometimes it helps to talk to someone who just gets it.

Today is Global Peer Support Day, and we’re celebrating the people who share their experiences, listen without judgment, swap ideas, and remind each other that we’re not alone.

Whether it’s a conversation, a support group, or a friendship that grows from a shared experience, peer support matters. Today, we’re giving a little extra love to the people who show up for each other.

86% of Disability Network Southwest Michigan’s board and staff are people with disabilities. We know firsthand that disability and talent go hand in hand!

This National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), we’re celebrating the skills, perspectives, and talent people with disabilities bring to the workplace, including right here at DNSWM.

Ope! We love technology... when it works! 😅

Unfortunately, we're experiencing internet service interruptions at our Kalamazoo office. As a result, this office will be closed for the rest of today and all day tomorrow. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.

Staff are still available by phone or email, so don't hesitate to call us at (269) 345-1516. We'll be back in person on Thursday.

: On Tuesdays we share a tip or fact about the to give better insight into who we are and what we stand for.

People with disabilities bring value and talent to work - and workplace accommodations can help lock in success.

A workplace accommodation is a change or adjustment that helps a person with a disability do their job, which can look different for everyone. Accommodations might include changes to scheduling, communication, equipment, the work environment, or how a job is performed. A fun fact: the majority of workplace accommodations are low-cost or even free.

Not sure where to start? Our October Community Education Series includes an Asking for Job Accommodations presentation on October 20 from 10:00 - 11:30 AM. It'll have practical information about accommodations and how to start the conversation.

✨ Accommodation Spotlight: Hank!

For National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), DNSWM staff are sharing what kinds of workplace accommodations help us show up as our best selves.

Hank wears hearing aids and uses an iPad to take notes during meetings and other conversations. Taking notes has been an important accommodation for him, especially when he went back to school, and it’s something he still relies on today. The iPad makes the note-taking process much easier.

Sometimes, an accommodation is as simple as having the right tool to help you keep up and stay connected.

✨ Accommodation Spotlight: Mona!

For National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), DNSWM staff are sharing what kinds of workplace accommodations help us show up as our best selves.

For Mona, sitting for long periods can be tough on her back, so she’s found a few things that help her get through the workday. This includes standing during longer meetings, using a yoga mat during breaks to lie down and reduce pressure on her back and feet, and using a standing desk.

She also has some flexibility in her schedule so she can make it to physical therapy appointments.

Sometimes, accommodations are simply about finding what works for you.

We're thankful for employers who look at a person's skills, experience, creativity, and contributions rather than making assumptions based on disability.

We're thankful for workplaces that are willing to make changes when needed, listen to their employees, and create opportunities for people to do what they do best.

This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we're celebrating employers who recognize that disability is part of the workforce, and disabled workers have a lot to bring to the table.
