We want to thank the Kalamazoo Growlers for hosting our Salute to Service night. We honored the Riney & Motley families last night for the sacrifices their fathers made for their country.

Today, on Purple Heart Day, we pause to honor the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of those wounded or killed in service to our nation.

This video highlights the families who have been honored as scholarship recipients through the Corporal Christopher Kelly Willis Foundation. Each family represents a legacy of service, sacrifice, and resilience.

The Purple Heart—originally established by General George Washington in 1782—remains one of the most respected military honors, awarded to service members who have been wounded, killed in action, or held as prisoners of war.

Over 1.8 million Purple Hearts have been awarded

August 7 is observed nationwide to reflect, remember, and give thanks

Freedom has a cost, and we will never forget those who paid it

Tonight at the Kalamazoo Growlers baseball game, we will proudly honor the 2025 recipient of the Corporal Christopher Kelly Willis Foundation Scholarship as part of Salute to Service Night / Military Appreciation Night.

We are honored to stand with these families and continue Corporal Willis’s legacy—to give, to serve, and to remember.

NEXT WEEK: Honoring Sacrifice. Investing in the Future. Each year, the Corporal Christopher Kelly Willis Foundation proudly awards college scholarships to the children of America’s fallen and wounded service members—carrying forward our mission to honor their legacies and support their families.

At our 2025 annual scholarship presentation, we are humbled to recognize Elea and James Riney, the children of Sgt. Douglas J. Riney and his wife Kylie. Sgt. Riney, a brave soldier and devoted husband and father, was killed in action on October 19, 2016, in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Through the generosity of our corporate and individual sponsors, Elea and James will each receive a future-use college scholarship to help fully cover their unmet tuition and college expenses.
Sgt. Riney was a decorated hero whose awards include the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, and a man of deep faith, family devotion, and community service. His memory lives on in the lives of Elea and James, and in the hearts of all who continue to honor his sacrifice.
To Elea and James:

Your father is an American Hero. This nation will never forget his bravery—or the promise of your future.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom and the depth of their commitment. May we never take for granted the liberties they defended, and may their legacy continue to inspire us all.
