The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners recently proclaimed June 5, 2026, as National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Kalamazoo County, honoring victims and survivors of gun violence and raising awareness about its impact on individuals, families, and communities.

Observed on the first Friday in June, National Gun Violence Awareness Day is part of the Wear Orange movement, which was inspired by the friends of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old whose life was tragically cut short by gun violence. They chose orange because hunters wear it to make themselves visible to others in the woods, and because it symbolizes the value of human life.

Today, we remember those whose lives have been affected by gun violence and recognize the ongoing efforts of residents, community organizations, educators, healthcare professionals, violence prevention advocates, and law enforcement partners working to build safer communities.
