🛠️ Community Volunteers Needed | Women Build Month – May 🛠️

This morning, Kalamazoo/Battle Creek NAWIC Chapter President Jennifer Sawyer with The Barton Group and Treasurer Laura Ash with ELITE COMPANIES was honored to attend the Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity Women Build Kickoff Breakfast, where one message was clear: Habitat for Humanity thrives because of volunteers.

This May, Habitat is working on six homes throughout Kalamazoo, a significant increase from the two builds typically completed in past years. As part of Women Build Month, volunteers will help construct sheds for each of these homes, supporting families as they build stability, pride, and long‑term opportunity through homeownership.

đź’› A powerful moment from the kickoff came from a Habitat homeowner who shared how owning a home has brought hope and a sense of legacy, especially while working from home to care for a child battling leukemia. She spoke about how meaningful it was to know how many women directly helped build her home.

đź‘· Everyone is welcome to volunteer!
You do not need construction experience.
You do not need to work in the industry.
This work is for the benefit of the entire community.

🧰 What volunteers can expect:
Build activities may take place:
In the Habitat warehouse, pre‑building shed components, or on‑site, depending on site readiness.
Specific details will be provided before your volunteer date
PPE is available if needed
Please wear closed‑toe, flat work shoes and dress for the weather

Women Build highlights the impact of women in construction, but this is truly a community build. Come as you are. Bring a friend. Help build something that lasts.

Chapter 302 is proud to be represented at the North Central Region Spring Forum this week! đź’™ Six of our members are attending and taking full advantage of the opportunity to learn, network, and collaborate with NAWIC leaders from across the region.

This year’s forum is being hosted by NAWIC Toledo 282 and NAWIC Lima, OH / Ft. Wayne, IN Chapter #374 at the beautiful Pokagon State Park Potawatomi Inn and Conference Center in Angola, Indiana. A fantastic setting for meaningful connection, leadership development, and inspiration.

We’re grateful for the time, talent, and energy our members invest in growing themselves and strengthening our chapter. Can’t wait to bring all this insight and momentum back to Chapter 302!

Today we’re celebrating Emily Bergel, Community Engagement and Laboratory Manager at Patriot Engineering and Environmental, Inc., who brings creativity, curiosity, and a passion for the sciences to her work in construction and environmental engineering.

Emily leads community engagement by developing new client relationships, maintaining existing partnerships, and helping expand Patriot’s presence in Southwest Michigan. She also manages Patriot’s laboratory operations—running tests on soil and concrete according to ASTM and AASHTO standards, supporting project managers with accurate data, and working toward CCRL accreditation for her lab. Alongside this, she continues to grow her knowledge in the environmental department.

Her journey into construction began with her college background in geology and a love for understanding how the earth works. After starting as a lab technician analyzing soil, rock, and concrete, she quickly became fascinated by how these materials shape the infrastructure people rely on every day. That curiosity set off a chain reaction—pushing Emily to explore every corner of the construction world Patriot is involved in.

Emily’s proudest accomplishment has been moving into Patriot’s new Portage office and stepping into roles that pushed her outside her comfort zone. Not only is she helping establish and grow the company’s newest location—she’s actively shaping its future.
Like many women early in their careers, Emily has faced moments of not being taken seriously. She’s learned that once she gets the chance to talk with others, her technical expertise speaks for itself. She approaches every challenge determined to be recognized as the skilled professional she is.

To Emily, “Level Up • Build Strong” is about setting strong foundations—literally and metaphorically—for herself and for other women in the industry. She levels up by refusing to box herself in, always seeking new skills, expanding her role, and lifting others up along the way. And she builds strong by being a welcoming resource for teammates, connecting people with solutions, and ensuring no one has to navigate alone.

Her advice to young women entering construction:
“Don’t be afraid to speak up—it’s one of the best ways to learn and prevent mistakes.”

Emily is also a new NAWIC member this year, and she jumped right in—already stepping into leadership as Membership Chair, helping grow and strengthen the community of women in construction.

Outside of work, Emily finds balance in creative writing, cozy video games, and spending time with the people who make her smile. She also loves playing Dungeons & Dragons, where she enjoys world‑building and problem‑solving with friends—just in a different kind of setting!

We’re excited to recognize Emily’s leadership, curiosity, and growing impact during WIC Week 2026.

WIC Week 2026 | Level Up • Build Strong

Today we’re celebrating Trisha Kidd, Director of Project Management and Principal Associate Broker at PlazaCorp Realty Advisors, Inc. who brings more than 20 years of diverse real estate experience across development, brokerage, property management, banking, and law.

In her role at PlazaCorp, Trisha helps guide complex development projects from the earliest idea to the final approval—overseeing due diligence, entitlements, contracts, incentives and grants, marketing, and community engagement. She collaborates closely with municipalities, consultants, and stakeholders to ensure successful, community‑focused outcomes across every phase of development.

Trisha is deeply involved in shaping Kalamazoo’s future beyond her day‑to‑day work. She serves on the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Michigan, as well as the The City of Kalamazoo, Michigan DDA/DEGA Board, where she helps support economic development, business growth, and community investment. She is also a member of the The CCIM Institute, the Commercial Alliance of Realtors (CAR) and state and national REALTOR® associations, and has previously taught pre‑licensure courses at the Greater Kalamazoo Association of REALTORS (GKAR).

Her career journey has been one of constant evolution. Originally from Mississippi, she moved to Michigan to attend Western Michigan University, later working in bank collections, leasing, residential brokerage, real estate law, and commercial brokerage. She even co‑founded a real estate company with her mother before pivoting during the recession to earn a Paralegal Certificate and intern with the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Over the years, she has continued to level up her expertise, even earning an Executive Certificate of Business Administration from Notre Dame.

One of her proudest accomplishments is helping advance the Transformational Brownfield initiative in Kalamazoo—supporting three major sites and securing more than $54 million in incentives toward nearly $100 million in investment. This project is one of only 16 transformational Brownfields in the state and is expected to drive meaningful, long‑term community impact.

Like many women in construction, she finds a challenge in navigating fast-paced, high-stakes industry that is still largely male-dominated. Trisha faces challenges with confidence, clarity, and resilience. She learned to assert her ideas, communicate directly, and focus on solutions—skills that now help her lead projects and teams with strength and credibility.

To Trisha, “Level Up • Build Strong” means continuous growth, lifelong learning, and building strong relationships that support great projects and stronger communities. She levels up by embracing new challenges and leadership opportunities, and she builds strong by fostering collaboration and creating developments that make a lasting difference.

Her advice to women entering construction or development:
“Stay confident, be curious, and never underestimate the value of strong relationships. Ask questions, speak up, find mentors—and remember your perspective matters.”

Outside of work, Trisha finds joy in supporting her children’s music and sports, traveling with her family, staying active with golf, tennis, and pickleball, and taking classes—she jokes that she’d love to be a professional student. Originally from the Gulf Coast near New Orleans, she also has a lifelong love of culture, music, and travel.

We’re honored to highlight Trisha’s leadership, expertise, and commitment to community‑centered development during WIC Week 2026.

WIC Week 2026 | Level Up • Build Strong

Today we’re celebrating Jessica Steele, Founder and Lead Consultant at Elevate Consulting Group, who brings over a decade of design, construction coordination, and client‑focused leadership to our industry.

Jessica leads Elevate Consulting with a passion for making residential design and construction more approachable and enjoyable. She creates 3D visualizations, detailed floor plans, guides clients through material selections, and partners with builders and contractors to bring each project’s vision to life. Her blend of creativity, technical understanding, and process‑driven organization has made her a trusted resource for both homeowners and small construction companies.

Jessica’s career began unexpectedly—as a receptionist at a painting company. Her eye for efficiency and natural problem‑solving quickly opened doors, leading her into estimating, project management, and even launching an entire cabinetry refinishing division. Those experiences sparked her love for blending creativity with construction and set her on the path to becoming a business owner.

Her proudest accomplishment? Taking the leap to start her own company—and using her experience to help others improve their processes, grow their businesses, and deliver better projects. Jessica believes deeply in supporting small contractors and building strong, collaborative relationships in the community.

Like many women in construction, Jessica has navigated moments of doubt and imposter syndrome. She overcame those challenges by building genuine relationships, trusting her expertise, and letting the quality of her work speak for itself. In her words, most people in this industry value collaboration and respect dedication—something she now helps other women see in themselves.

To Jessica, “Level Up • Build Strong” means continuous growth, shared knowledge, and lifting each other up. She levels up by staying curious, embracing new technology, seeking feedback, and investing in leadership and personal development. She builds strong by supporting contractors, empowering clients with knowledge, mentoring others, and helping strengthen the foundations of local businesses.

Her advice to young women entering or growing in the industry:
“Be curious, confident, and persistent. Ask questions, seek mentors, trust your perspective, and support other women along the way.”

Outside of work, Jessica finds joy in gardening, kayaking, exploring nature, spending time with family and her dogs—and collecting more plants than she says she needs!

We are proud to spotlight Jessica’s creativity, leadership, and commitment to strengthening our construction community during WIC Week 2026.

WIC Week 2026 | “Level Up • Build Strong”

Today we’re celebrating Holly Hickman, Executive Administrator at D-K Fence Co. Inc., who brings 10 years of dedication and drive to the construction industry.

Holly plays a key role in keeping projects organized and running smoothly—supporting leadership and field teams, coordinating bids and schedules, and ensuring communication stays clear and consistent across every job. She began her construction career in 2017, quickly stepping into project management and building her expertise through hands on learning and determination.

Holly is most proud of growing her career without formal training—proving herself through hard work, accuracy, and resilience. Like many women in the field, she’s faced moments of not being taken seriously, but she earned respect by showing up prepared, staying consistent, and letting her results speak for themselves.

To her, “Level Up • Build Strong” means pushing past comfort zones, strengthening skills, and supporting others along the way. She continues to level up through ongoing learning, leadership, and mentoring women entering the trades—and she builds strong by contributing to high quality projects and a more inclusive industry.

Her advice to women entering construction:
“Trust your skills, stay confident, keep learning, and let your work prove your value.”

She also shared something powerful: Construction sites with more women are safer and more productive.

Outside of work, Holly enjoys gardening, time with her dogs, and relaxing lake days—we love that balance!

We’re proud to honor Holly’s impact, leadership, and voice during WIC Week 2026.
