Great article about a Kalamazoo event at a new, all ages venue..

With intimate shows that blend punk, experimental music, performance art, and fundraising, Glow Hall’s founder is betting that Kalamazoo’s crowded creative scene still has room for events that are deliberately small, collaborative, and a little extra.

DATE: JANUARY 31, 2026
LOCATION: DORMOUSE THEATRE'S BASEMENT
DOORS: 7PM | SHOW: 8PM
ALL AGES | $10 DONATION

Inspired by the Punk Rock Lottery in Austin, TX, this is what happens when you let chance book the show.

In early December, a group of Kalamazoo musicians put their names into hats and let fate decide their new bands. No planning, no pre-existing projects—just a room, a pile of names, and the agreement to see it through.

From that night, three brand-new bands were formed:

FLAVOR COUNTRY
Local ingredients. Unexpected results. No filter.
Mark / Mason / Kyle
members of Bike Tuff, Camp Dad, and Paper Sound

MEAT CUTE
This intro will be unforgettable. Sorry in advance.
Jena / Jeremy / Garth / Mike / Reggi
members of Sierra Miffed, Lucius Fox, The Rutabaga, and more bands in the scene than can fit on one flyer.

THE LIP STITCHES
Hitting hard. Crowd goes feral.
Vee / David / JP / Izaac / Eve
members of The Mushmen, Crash City Saints, and The Medieval Society.

None of these musicians had worked together before this project. Since the draw, each band has been tasked with writing five original songs and learning one cover, all in a limited window, before bringing it to the stage.

On January 31, they’ll play it all live—judged by a panel and a room full of punks. At the end of the night, trophies and bragging rights will be awarded for first, second, and last place.

The lineup is decided day-of, so showing up early means seeing everything as it unfolds.

All proceeds will be donated to Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes, supporting food access in our community.

Huge thanks to our friends and sponsors at Kalamazoo Sportswear for helping make this possible.

This is an experiment built on chance.
A community project held together by the scene.
Brought to life on stage.

OH! This is also my birthday party! So... definitely come hang out and celebrate with me!

Here's a fella that Kalamazoo, Michigan gets to brag about. Raygun Recording Studio owner & operator, Chris Frankhauser. Chris's many contributions to this area (and beyond) go back to the early 90s and the MAMRC recognizes his help and accomplishments!

Audio engineer and musician Chris Frankhauser delves into his process for mixing and mastering bass and low frequencies for synth, hip-hop, metal, punk, and other music genres, with the assistance of sealed SVS subwoofers.

ATTENTION! THE MAMRC BRINGS YOU THIS STORY OF UNPRECEDENTED GENEROSITY:

A Kalamazoo fella by the name of Gene Rath has done an amazing thing for area punk bands. The "this is it..." compilation album will be up for sale on 12" vinyl and CD starting November 1st. Gene has fully funded the manufacturing of this record out of his own pocket, under his brand new label, Back Ache Records. All copies of the album's pressing have been split among each of the contributing bands, free of charge. Each band is free to sell their inventory at merch tables or elsewhere at their own price, keeping 100% of the revenue for themselves! For the 12" LP version, the front covers provide ample space beneath the album title, allowing the bands to personalize each album cover with their own artwork.

Gene Rath: "I started the label with the intent of putting out music I love, punk and outsider music, on vinyl. I also wanted to pay back the punk community, which has meant so much to me for so long. I stood on the sidelines and took all of it in for many years, but in my 50s I became motivated to do something more. This compilation is a result of the inspiration to get involved—to do something for some of the current bands I love and to put out something cool."

This compilation is instantly legendary. It begins with a track from The Crosses (Dan Kubinski's current project of Die Kreuzen fame) and closes out with two tracks from long time Detroit legends, STATE. Everything in between is nothing short of world class punk rock from dear friends.

Album contributors and MAMRC friends, No Sympatico will be offering your very first opportunity to purchase your copy of "this is it..." at their live show, this weekend (Nov 1st) at SugarBowl Bar & Grille in Kalamazoo with Archaea and Wolf Bite. (Archaea will also be celebrating their own album release on this night!)

Gene and Back Ache Records puts out a special thanks to Michael List of Thee Elder Gods for his energy and talent in assisting with this incredible project. See you all at the shows!
