For those who journey to Germany and are unsure about tipping at restaurants.

An American sits down in a German restaurant, gets a bill for 47.50, and leaves 20% like a good person. The waiter is confused. The Germans at the next table are staring.
In Germany, you don't tip 20%. You round up. 47.50 becomes 50. A 3.80 coffee becomes 4. You say the total out loud as you hand over the money — "machen Sie fünfzig" — and that is that. Generous, polite, done.
Why? Because German waiters earn a real wage, with health insurance and paid vacation. The tip is a thank-you — not their rent.
No percentage math. No spinning tip screens. No guilt with dessert.
Be honest: would you miss the American tipping system — or would you be relieved?
