The Catholic Funding Guide offers practical advice on building great relationships with grantees. The core principle: treat grant recipients as partners. Thank them for what they do. Introduce them to other funders. Always listen. Provide feedback that's constructive and timely.

When funders approach grantees as partners instead of vendors, the entire dynamic shifts. Grantees feel valued. They're more willing to share challenges and ask for support. Innovation becomes possible.

This resource is brief, practical, and grounded in the belief that partnership is the foundation of impact.

The nonprofit sector is full of conversations that never happen.

Conversations...
- between funders and nonprofits about what's actually working and what isn't
- about constraints and challenges
- about what's possible when you're honest with each other

These conversations don't happen because there's often nowhere safe to have them. The power dynamics feel too risky, and when it comes to conversations between nonprofits and funders, we've learned to protect ourselves instead of co-create solutions together.

What if there was space for these conversations?
What if you could name what's broken without judgment?
What if collaboration felt possible again?

The conversations that never happen are often the ones that would change everything for our organizations and our sector.

Trust is a practice. It's what happens when funders and nonprofits sit in the same room with shared goals, honest timelines, and a willingness to learn together.

Trust as practice means showing up consistently. It means naming challenges without judgment. It means being transparent about what you know and what you don't. It means treating your partners as collaborators.

When trust becomes a practice, the work moves further and lasts longer. Relationships deepen. Communities thrive. Impact multiplies.

What would change if your organization treated trust as something you practice every day?

Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) research on funder-nonprofit relationships digs into what constitutes a strong relationship and what nonprofits say it takes for funders to foster genuine partnerships.

The research analyzed the perspectives of nearly 20,000 grantees of 86 foundations. It found that nonprofits say the most powerful ways funders can strengthen relationships are to focus on understanding grantee organizations and the context in which they work, and to be transparent with grantees.

The nonprofit sector speaks in acronyms and frameworks and strategic initiatives when what we actually mean is: we need help. We're struggling. We need partners who understand what we're doing.

Clarity is radical in a sector that hides behind jargon. Clarity means saying what you mean, naming problems directly. and having funders and nonprofits speaking to each other in language they mutally understand.

When we choose clarity, conversations become real and relationships deepen. When we choose clarity, solutions emerge that wouldn't have been possible when everyone was speaking in code.

What would change if your sector conversations became clearer?

Real change in the nonprofit sector requires courage. The kind of courage that shows up when a funder admits they don't have all the answers. The kind that appears when a nonprofit leader names what's actually broken instead of what looks good on a report.

Courage means choosing honesty over comfort. It means sitting in difficult conversations. It means building relationships grounded in what's real, in what's possible when you're honest with each other.

When funders and nonprofits choose courage together, the work moves further and lasts longer. Systems shift. Communities thrive.

What would it look like if your organization chose courage this week?
