Thank you, Michigan Realtors, for inviting us to be part of the fair housing panel at your conference in Traverse City!

Our Executive Director, Beth Romeo, joined fellow leaders from Fair Housing Center of West Michigan, Fair Housing Center of Southeast & Mid Michigan, and Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit to discuss fair housing challenges and ways Realtors can partner with local fair housing centers to support equal access to housing.

We appreciated the opportunity to connect, share ideas, and learn together. Thank you to our fellow panelists and everyone who joined the conversation!

Did You Know?

38 years ago this month, the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988 was signed into law.

This act requires that private housing providers commit to accessibility during construction and by allowing reasonable accommodations that would allow people living with disabilities the ability to more fully use and enjoy their homes.

These protections have dramatically improved housing choice for people with disabilities.

With disability being the most cited protected class in fair housing complaints, the importance of this act cannot be overstated!

Follow us on our socials or check out our website at www.fhcswm.org for more information on how fair housing intersects with disability and other protected classes!

Thank you to Dr. Zoann Snyder, Associate Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice Studies Program Director, and Shawn Tenney, Director of Community Engaged Learning, for inviting FHCSWM to speak with Western Michigan University criminal justice studies students today!

We had a great conversation about fair housing, housing discrimination, and the role investigation and advocacy can play in advancing housing access. We also shared an opportunity for students to put their learning into action through a service-learning project with our organization.

Students will also have an opportunity to participate in projects at Communities In Schools of Kalamazoo, New Genesis Inc., Fox Music Center, Urban Alliance, Dignity in Motion , Douglass Community Association, LEAN On Healing with Healing On Purpose, and ASK Family Services.

We’re excited to see where this partnership leads and grateful to WMU for creating opportunities that connect students with community organizations and real-world issues.
