A Publication of Western Michigan University’s Graduate Creative Writing Program

Founded in 1995 by graduate students of the Western Michigan University English department, Third Coast is one of the nation’s premier literary magazines—and one of only a handful of nationally distributed literary magazines to regularly include four genres; Third Coast consistently publishes excellent, and often award-winning, fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and drama.

Last, but certainly not least, we're elated to introduce our Editor-in-Chief, K.D. Battle!!

Full bio below:
K.D. Battle (he/him) is a multi-genre writer and teacher living in Kalamazoo. His chapbook, A Midwestern Primer to Dao Zen; or, the Kalamasutra
, recently won the Celery City Chapbook Poetry and is forthcoming from Friends of Poetry. He’s a Buddhist, ex-lead singer, Navy submarine vet, and a writer and composer of musical theatre; his debut musical, "The Dead Memoirs," is in development & sold-out its opening run of concert readings at the Dormouse Theatre. Battle’s poems, stories, and essays have been published in venues like The Writer's Chronicle, Vita Poetica, Bear River Review, White Wall Review, and Line of Advance, where he won the Wright Memorial Writing Award for prose in 2024. He earned his MFA from Western Michigan University, where he is now pursuing a PhD and serves as Third Coast Magazine's Editor-in-Chief. He is the co-founder of The Rambling Read and can be coerced to play in bands around town.

Sam Ruff is a multi-media writer and artist from Milan, Michigan. Previously, her work has been seen in Of Rust and Glass, Planet Venus, Slash Magazine, and Makeshift Gallery. She was previously the editor of The Mill and currently is the Managing Editor of Third Coast. Sam is currently pursuing an MFA in poetry from Western Michigan University and continuing to work towards her dreams of publishing and presses. We're so excited to introduce our sole Drama Editor, Kristen Field!

Full bio below:
Kristen (she/they) is a q***r, non-binary writer from Melbourne, Australia. While primarily a playwright, she also experiments with poetry and non-fiction and explores notions of intimacy and desire, womanhood, mental and physical illness, and the rift between public and private identity in her work. You can find her writing in Hayden's Ferry Review's The Dock, The Citron Review, Blood+Honey, The Rumen, Qu Lit Mag, and Feels Blind Literary, among other presses. Her full-length play sex/work premiered earlier this year at Playhouse on the Square in Memphis, and she recently completed a residency at Renaissance Theaterworks in Milwaukee.

Gray Hopkins (he/him) grew up in several southern states and is still convinced the winters up here are some kind of cruel joke. He’s a big fan of anything weird and unsettling in fiction and thinks one of the best compliments someone can give a piece of writing is if they have to say “now bear with me” before trying to explain it. If he’s not writing, he’s probably crocheting, nerding out about Batman, or playing with his cats.
