“Compelled by Christ’s love.” Those first four words of our mission are at the heart of why Mark serves with Safe Families.

Growing up in this community and working for 30 years with Youth for Christ, Mark has never felt alone. Today, he knows there are many families who experience isolation.

He has watched single moms who are struggling without a support system experience radical compassion through our volunteers and network of churches. He sees God at work as the community rallies around families in need.

We’re grateful for the heart and experience Mark brings to Safe Families of Southwest Michigan!

Melissa is our first ever family friend volunteer!

She first connected with Safe Families through New Life Church and kept serving even after moving to Valley Family Church. Having seen the harder sides of foster care, she was drawn to the mission of keeping kids safe with their parents.

She knew she had time, resources, and relationships to offer and as a volunteer, she’s gathered cleaning supplies, collected clothing through her Bible study groups, encouraged struggling moms, given rides, and stepped in to meet practical needs.

Melissa also loves getting to know the kids and protecting their young hearts. She’s inspired by parents' bravery to ask for help and believes deeply in rebuilding the “village” every family needs.

Her encouragement to others: start with one small, doable step. Every act of support moves the mission forward.

Kari first became involved as a host family volunteer, experiencing the power of the Safe Families community and learning that when you say yes to serving, you never have to do it alone.

Today, Kari brings that same heart for hospitality and service to her role as Operations Coordinator. She helps keep our chapter organized and technologically strong, building systems that help volunteers and families thrive.

We’re grateful for the dedication and wisdom Kari brings to Safe Families of Southwest Michigan!

Many parents facing poverty or stress don’t have the support they need. Without a strong network, children can become vulnerable to neglect or unnecessary separation.

Safe Families steps into that gap with the love of Jesus.

Our evidence‑based, Family First‑approved model surrounds parents with a Circle of Support, connecting them with caring volunteers from churches across our city who offer encouragement and practical help so families can stabilize and move forward.

When the Church and community come together, hope grows.

After working in the foster care system, Jenny knows firsthand that the need for family support is greater than most people ever realize. She has seen how important it is for families to have someone they can call before a crisis escalates.

As a mother of three herself, she can’t imagine not having support when something goes wrong.

Jenny loves watching volunteers use their gifts to care for their communities. She sees Safe Families as a way for the Church to step in to welcome families and meet practical needs.

We’re grateful for the compassion and joy Jenny brings to Safe Families of Southwest Michigan!

Our core values define our volunteers, churches, and our staff.

These aren't just words or phrases we say.

They are transformative actions we embody as we serve our community.

Truly seeing a person is at the heart of biblical hospitality. It’s a radical, counter‑cultural way of welcoming others and one that reflects the character of Jesus.

Let’s think about hospitality in two ways.

First, we’re called to share with those “who are in need.” Since every one of us carries needs, every encounter becomes an opportunity to notice others rather than focus on ourselves.

Second, we practice hospitality. This isn’t a skill reserved for people who excel at entertaining, it’s a Christ‑like posture we learn over time as we pay attention to the people God places around us.

This is the kind of hospitality that transforms communities.

Some people jump in with wholehearted commitment from day one, and Lou and Shanae are exactly that kind of couple. They got involved right away as a Host Family, and Shanae stepped into the role of Ministry Lead at New Life Church with passion and purpose.

During their very first hosting, they cared for three children, including one with unexpected needs. They were ready with flexibility and a willingness to show up no matter what.

Shanae is a true champion for the movement, recruiting and keeping people engaged while building meaningful connections with families. Lou brings a “let’s make it happen” spirit, always ready to find solutions and step in wherever help is needed.

Their partnership and dedication make a powerful impact. Thank you both for your investment and the way you serve with such heart.

We’re not foster care.

We’re a prevention ministry that surrounds families with the love of Jesus so children can remain safely at home with their parents. 💚🩵

The Church is central to God’s work in every community. We believe our role is simply to come alongside churches as they live out the mission Christ has already entrusted to them.

We’re not asking churches to advance our mission, we’re asking how we can help you live out yours.

Through Safe Families, churches have practical opportunities to:

🩵 Care for Families
🩵 Strengthen Discipleship
🩵 Build Community
