All this week we're celebrating the 61st Anniversary of the Merrie Monarch Festival here on the Big Island of Hawaii!!
Being a somewhat small intimate setting/venue, tickets can be hard to come by, so EVERY YEAR we stream it live or catch it on a local TV broadcast in HD...with volume turned up loud during chants and hula performances to feel like we are there. (y)
Group Hula Kahiko night is by far my fave. It is when the various Hālau hula perform ancient style dances that are VERY powerful and moving, with much Mana and chicken skin. 😉..and this year will be at 6:00 pm HST, Friday, April 5th at the Edith Kanakaʻole Stadium.
To watch the contest live, local station KFVE 5 will stream the event from its website. https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/merriemonarch/
Locally (in islands), if you can’t stream your web browser to your TV, you can catch it if you can get K5 on channel 1006/06 with Spectrum, Hawaiian Tel or DirecTV, and on channel 8 with Dish Network.
Broadcasting Schedule:
Miss Aloha Hula Competition: Thursday, April 4, 6 p.m., HST
Hula Kahiko Competition: Friday, April 5, 6 p.m., HST
Hula ʻAuana Competition: Saturday, April 6, 6 p.m., HST
I/We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!..with Aloha! 🌺

Hulō Hulō! He leo mahalo kēia iā ʻoukou pākahi a pau…
The results are in: our beloved Merrie Monarch Festival has been voted as USA Today’s Best Cultural Festival in the nation!
We’d like to also recognize Oʻahu’s Aloha Festivals: a celebration of the music, dance, food, and cultural traditions of the Hawaiian archipelago, that placed No. 9 on the same list.
The Merrie Monarch Festival steadfastly works to maintain the teachings of our kūpuna, and we strive to perpetuate the history and culture of Hawaiian people in a manner that respects those teachings. Through our efforts, along with those of other organizations, we seek to ensure that the unique traditions of Hawaiian people will continue to flourish.
Mahalo for your votes and mahalo nui for sharing your aloha for hula and the Hawaiian culture.
