On July 24, 1886, the Hawaiian language newspaper, Nupepa Kuokoa, published an article about the first lighting of Hale Aupuni, or the government buildings:
“On Wednesday night, people from everywhere gathered to see the Hale Aupuni lighted with electricity for the first time. Lights strung on wires placed at Iolani Hale, Hale Mele, Aliiolani Hale, Likelike and King Street were turned on, and all were thrilled with the brightness never seen before. Five tents had been set up and tables with light refreshments (ice cream, cake, punch, etc.) were served to all. The Aliis sat at a special table. A battalion of guardsmen paraded. At 10, the Alii led the parade of guardsmen back to their quarters which ended the event.”
