Windward Buddhist Temple Founded in 1968, Windward Buddhist Temple is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temple located in Kailua, Hawaii.

Windward Buddhist Temple is a branch of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii serving Windward Oahu. Kailua Hongwanji Mission is now Windward Buddhist Temple, a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temple and a branch of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii serving Windward Oahu. Kailua Hongwanji Mission was established in 1968 at its present location on Kuulei Road in Kailua, Hawaii. In 2012, through the suppo

rt and vision of its membership, the original temple was demolished and rebuilt. The new temple was completed and dedicated on February 22, 2014, which coincided with major donor Dorthy Ono's 10th Memorial Anniversary. On January 1, 2019, Kailua Hongwanji Mission became Windward Buddhist Temple, reflecting its expanding role through the entire Windward side of Oahu.

Although our weekly Dharma Services are on summer break until September, other temple activities have been continuing during the month of August. Rev. Kevin Kuniyuki has been conducting a series of Dharma Classes on Saturdays entitled "Understanding Shin Buddhism Through Study of Shinran’s Shoshinge."

The classes have been a combination of chanting Shoshinge and discussing a graphic novel adapted for Buddhist Education titled, "Shoshinge Saga."

As has been our tradition at Windward Buddhist Temple, we take a break during the month of August. Our next Dharma Service will be on Sunday, September 6, with guest speaker Rev. Kevin Kuniyuki. Please enjoy our library of past recorded services on our YouTube channel.

For other temple activities, such as tai chi and ikebana, please confirm the schedules with your instructor. For the most part, these activities continue uninterrupted in August.

Our final service for the month of July was our Remembrance Service on Sunday, July 26. Rev. Shingo Furusawa of Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin and Liaison Minister for Windward Buddhist Temple lead the service and gave the Dharma message.

As is our tradition, there will be no services during the month of August. We will resume on September 6, where our officiant and Guest Speaker will be Rev. Kevin Kuniyuki.

Remembrance Dharma Service for Sunday, July 26, 2026 with a Dharma Talk by Rev. Shingo Furusawa, Liaison Minister of Windward Buddhist Temple. This Jodo Shinshu Buddhist service was officiated by Rev. Furusawa. Rev. Shingo's Dharma Message was titled, "Overcoming our Make*").

* "Make" means "death" in the Hawaiian language.

The monthly Remembrance Service is a time to honor family, friends, and even pets who passed away during the month of July, regardless of the year. This Jodo Shinshu Buddhist church service was recorded at Windward Buddhist Temple, a Shin Buddhist Temple in Kailua, Hawaii.

This is the last Dharma Service before we take our annual August break. We will resume Dharma Services on Sunday, September 6, 2026. Have a great August and see you in September!

Dharma Service for Sunday, July 19, 2026 with a Dharma Talk by temple president, Dennis Tashiro. This Jodo Shinshu Buddhist service was officiated by Raymond Takiue of Mo'ili'ili Hongwanji. Dennis shares the story "The Humble Pie" by Jory John and connects the themes of interdependence and interconnectedness with last weekend's Bon Dance.

Next week's Remembrance Service will be the last service before we go on our traditional summer break in August. Sunday Dharma Services will resume in September.
