Windward Buddhist Temple Founded in 1968, Windward Buddhist Temple is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temple located in Kailua, Hawaii.

Windward Buddhist Temple is a branch of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii serving Windward Oahu. Kailua Hongwanji Mission is now Windward Buddhist Temple, a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temple and a branch of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii serving Windward Oahu. Kailua Hongwanji Mission was established in 1968 at its present location on Kuulei Road in Kailua, Hawaii. In 2012, through the support and vision of its membership, the original temple was demolished and rebuilt. The new temple was completed and dedicated on February 22, 2014, which coincided with major donor Dorthy Ono's 10th Memorial Anniversary. On January 1, 2019, Kailua Hongwanji Mission became Windward Buddhist Temple, reflecting its expanding role through the entire Windward side of Oahu.

We held our Minister Appreciation Service on Sunday, October 11. All aspects of Sunday's service were handled by temple members. We asked Rev. Shingo Furusawa to attend as our guest so that we could express our appreciation for his work as our Liaison Minister and for helping us with our temple's ministerial needs.

Minister Appreciation Dharma Service for Sunday, October 11, 2026 with a Dharma Talk by Prudence Kusano. This Jodo Shinshu Buddhist service was officiated by Dennis Tashiro, temple president and Certified Minister’s Lay Assistant. Prudence shared the story, "If You Plant a Seed" by Kadir Nelson.

As part of our Minister Appreciation Service, all aspects of today's service were handled by temple members. We asked Rev. A big mahalo (thank you) to our members, families, and friends who volunteered at this year's Windward Mall Bon Dance in Kaneohe on October 3rd.

From the outside crew cooking and packaging the andagi, to the inside team selling our takuan, tsukemono, six different types of manju, peanut butter balls, and more, we couldn't have done it without you!

For those who were asking about the next time for WBT Bon Dance food, we tentatively have it at three events each year: the Spring Bazaar at Honpa Hongwanji Betsuin in March, our Bon Dance in Kailua at our temple in July, and the Windward Mall Bon Dance in October. We will have some new food items this year at the Windward Mall 6th Annual Bon Dance Festival, today, October 3rd at Windward Mall. Here's a preview of the edamame rice, mochi cupcakes, and banana bread. We'll also have nantu (Okinawan mochi), a returning favorite.
