Mahalo to everyone who volunteered with us this past week on Memorial Day! We were very lucky to see two flocks of Ae’o chicks! One of the mama birds was bent down low close to her chicks to offer shelter, warmth, and protection.
We restored our native forest near the wetland at Hāmākua and admired the mama with her chicks before sunset. Always special to see the endangered Ae’o taking care of their young 🪶

It’s always a great time when our neighbors down Hāmākua Drive visit us! Mahalo for joining us this May to mālama Hāmākua 🌿

We learned about native plants and birds and worked along the slope where Volcanic Rock Gym’s youth group and families helped clear and plant about a year ago. Amazing seeing how much we and the plants have grown.

Until next time 💚

That’s a wrap for our 2025-2026 planting season! We want to wish a warm mahalo to our awesome volunteers who showed up to mālama Hāmākua and plant native species on the hillside and along the wetland 🌱🧤

Many of the native trees and shrubs planted this year were propagated from seed at Hāmākua and grown at our nursery by our own staff, students, and volunteers!

Until next planting season, we’ll be restoring Hāmākua by removing invasive plants and protecting our native forest. Join us:

Cub Scout Pack 167 from Ewa Beach and parents crossed the island to plant native and endangered Hawaiian plants today: ‘Ohai, ma’o hau hele, ewa hinahina, ahu’awa and ulei. They were a focused, hardworking group, but still had energy to run on our bird walk after. We definitely hope they come back!

Mahalo to our new friends at for traveling all the way from Kapolei to Kailua to celebrate Earth Day with us at Hāmākua Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary! 🌳🧤🌎

We enjoyed a beautiful, sunny morning with IPA’s 8th graders as we planted a variety of native trees and some students also got to plant for the first time. We focused on our newly restored section of Pu’u o ‘Ehu, the hillside and watershed of Hāmākua Marsh.

Every tree planted is a step toward protecting our forests and wetlands for years to come, and we’re excited to welcome these students as new stewards of Hāmākua!

Mahalo students and all volunteers who kicked off April with us at our First Saturday! The sun finally came back out and it started to feel like spring 🌼
We climbed high up the hillside above Hāmākua Marsh to w**d around our native trees and plants 🌿 and enjoyed clear views of the ocean and wetland down below. We also collected ‘a’ali’i seeds ready to be propagated and eventually plant in our native forest on the hillside, also known as Pu’u o ‘Ehu ⛰️
Join us on Monday, April 20 from 4-6pm for some Earth Week fun at Hāmākua! Signup link in our bio.
