Swipe to see Jackie’s ‘āweoweo grow 🪴 Planted in April 2025 by our amazing core volunteer, Jackie, this not-so-little ‘āweoweo is now seeding! We also found a great nature journal entry thanks to Kate. This summer with volunteers, we collected and sowed seeds from the same shrub for future plantings at Hāmākua.
Did you know? 💭 ‘Āweoweo is an endemic shrub that was found at Hāmākua before people arrived. This shrub and a red fish called the Hawaiian bigeye are paired with the same name. The Hawaiian creation chant (the Kumulipo) said that when something was created in the ocean it was also created on land, or in the air, or both.
Mahalo to our awesome volunteers for helping preserve native species 🧤

Appreciating Anna, who has organized and hosted our events over the past 2 1/2 years with such grace towards our volunteers and such purpose towards restoring the ‘āina. The area around the wetland in particular has transformed under her stewardship. Anna’s talents are spread across many initiatives and we wish her the best with all of them.

MAHALO to everyone who joined us this weekend at our 10th Cleanup of Hāmākua Canal! Together, we removed 1,440 pounds of trash from Hāmākua Marsh and the shoreline!

We’re always amazed by our friends who show up twice a year to mālama Hāmākua for the birds and our community. Stay tuned for the next cleanup! 💚🪶🧤
