Healthy Climate Communities Community education and action to solve climate change. Want to do something about climate change?

Healthy Climate Communities (HCC) is working with 10 schools to teach students about climate change through 50+ workshops, and has restored a section of Hamakua Marsh with hundreds of native trees and plants. Many volunteers have helped, and everyone is welcome to lend their talents!

Monday volunteers helped free our pōhinahina and 'ahu'awa from vines. This crew was composed entirely of returning volunteers so we got into our flow, chatted, and enjoyed the view as the sun set over Hāmākua Marsh.

This week, we celebrated fall break with Kamaʻaina Kids A+ Pearl Harbor Kai Day Camp. Students learned how to make cordage, planted 'a'ali'i and kou in plot five, and learned about our native birds.

Monday's volunteers were joined by windward run club. Our evening began with collecting ma'o, 'ohai, 'āweoweo, and 'akiohala seeds around our native plant garden. We then propagated kou, 'ohai, 'āweoweo, and 'akiohala and up-potted 'a'ali'i for our nursery. The sun set as we finished off our evening with weeding along the marsh while enjoying our view.

Ka’ōhao School is so special in the history of our program - 4th and 6th grades were our very first school groups, planting near the entrance. 5th grade piloted our first science curriculum unit, still in use. 2nd graders have planted and learned for the last 8 years. Other grades have come in and out. We were grateful for the faculty visit to see how else we can support Ka’ohao School students.

This week, WCC's ahupua`a class helped us decide on a spot for our new shade house, weeded, and planted a`ali`i, koa, and ilima. We are excited to have them back in December to see their plants thriving along the hillside and our fence line.

Mahalo to Señora Reimann's Spanish 3 Class at Le Jardin Academy for visiting us to learn about how a landfill placed at Kapa`a Quarry might impact us at Hāmākua Marsh. These high school students weeded, planted 21 ferns, and bird watched while we students and staff alike practiced our Spanish and helped restore Pu`u o Ehu.
