Today marks one year of Ka ʻUmeke Kāʻeō. 💚
For the young people who walk through these doors, this place can mean a meal. A shower. Clean clothes. Someone to talk to. Help figuring out housing, school or work. A place to feel welcome and supported.
And sometimes, simply a place to be. That is what makes Ka ʻUmeke Kāʻeō so important.
Its name describes a well-filled ʻumeke, a calabash filled with nourishment. But it also represents something more: a vessel for knowledge and guidance, helping people along a path toward greater self-sufficiency.
Over the past year, our young people have helped make this space their own. They’ve learned, connected, created and even helped tell the story of Waiʻanae on its walls through a mural honoring the moʻolelo of Kaiona, known for guiding people to safety.
Today we celebrate one year of showing up for young people in Waiʻanae, and everyone who has helped fill this ʻumeke with food, knowledge, culture, opportunity, support and aloha.
Happy one year, Ka ʻUmeke Kāʻeō. 🌱
