Better prepared than sorry - Charge Up Now

Hurricane Lowell continues to be a threat to Hawaii. A state of emergency has been called by Governor Green to activate needed resources. The threat is especially concerning for the western part of the state. Let's be prepared.

Now is the time to charge up our EVs. This is an appropriate to top off over 80%. If you have stationary storage, e.g., Tesla's Powerwall, it is also a good time to bump up your backup capacity. If your vehicle is Vehicle-to-Load compatible, i.e., it has a 110v or 240v outlet, get a compatible extension cord so that you can conveniently power appliances inside you home.

GM’s Chevy Bolt (based on the previous Bolt EUV, larger than the original version) is an ideal island electric vehicle. It is easy to maneuver, peppy, and around 250 miles on a charge.

It looks like dealers may have a pile. Cutter Chevy has several.

A new EV tax? Say No. 🚫

Hawaiʻi already has a fair road usage charge for EV drivers. Hawaii EV collaborated with HDOT and other entities to design it. Since July 2025, our EV owners pay $50 a year, or 0.8 cents a mile, capped at $50. That money funds our road infrastructure. (It will change to a pure mileage-based charge in 2028.)

Now, Congress wants to add a second bill on top of it. BUILD America 250 Act would charge EV owners a new federal registration fee starting at $130 a year (rising to $150 by 2029). Gas car drivers pay about $85 a year into the federal Highway Trust Fund. BUILD America 250 also cuts funding for EV charging infrastructure.

EVs make up about 2% of vehicles on the road nationally. This fee won't fix a $30 billion annual shortfall. A better fix would be to adjust the federal gas tax, which hasn't changed since 1993.

Hawaii's latest NEVI DC Fast Charger hub is live! ⚡

The station is located at the Kapalua Airport in Maui. It includes the standard NEVI configuration - four 150 kW DC fast chargers. The hub is capable of dispensing 150 kW at four ports concurrently. Two stations have CCS and NACS connectors; two have CCS and CHAdeMO connectors. (This means that EV owners can use the hub without the need for adapters.)
