The inaugural Franz Weber Memorial Ride was held this morning with 20 riders making the 50-mile round trip between the Kona Community Aquatic Center and Bike Works Beach & Sports at Waikoloa Queen's Market. This was an opportunity to honor the life and legacy of our great friend Franz by doing one of the things he loved best, riding his bicycle along this route. Our thanks go to Joanna Weber for making a few welcoming comments and christening the event, and the several other guests who attended but were not able to ride. Mahalo Debbie Hecht for the nice photos.

Saturday was our The Bike Works Beach & Sports Gran Fondo and it was great to see everyone. Congrats on your ride!
Big Mahalos to all our Volunteers and those who made additional donations. There were 40 riders with over half of them riding the Big Island Century starting from Spencer Beach Park, turning south, then east up Waikoloa Road, through Waimea and down to Honokaa, up to the Hawaiian Vanilla Company, down to the Waipio Valley Overlook and back to Spencer via Kawaihae Road with about 9,000 feet of vertical over 104 miles. The balance of riders chose between a 72-mile super metric century, a 53-mile or 45-mile route. Some opted for a Fun Ride of various distances. All riders enjoyed a Taco Bar lunch from Patricio’s Mexican Taqueria in the Pavilion. Proceeds from this event go to Hospice of Kona, Inc Foundation who provide compassionate end-of-life care to our community.
See you this coming weekend for our Franz Weber Memorial Ride.

A week after the Gran Fondo, join us for our first Franz Weber Memorial Ride. We'll leave from the Kona Community Aquatic Center at 730am.

In April 2025 we lost our Club President, a great public servant, friend, and anchor of our community. Franz served the Hawaii Cycling Club and the entire Big Island community selflessly, generously, transparently, energetically, and unconditionally. We hold him in our permanent memory for his high ethical conduct, unwavering dedication to helping others, positive attitude, and endless energy and availability, especially to those in greatest need. Franz embodied all the virtues of a dedicated champion for the community and as an enduring model of generosity and kindness.

Join the Big Island cycling community in honoring Franz for this annual recreational group ride following Franz's favorite route from the Kona Community Aquatics Center to the Queen's Shops at Waikoloa. Riders have the option of a 24.5-mile one way ride or 49-mile round trip. Refreshments and Talk Story will be set up in the parking lot behind Bike Works Beach & Sports at the Waikoloa Queens Shops. This event is intended for cyclists of all abilities and age levels who enjoy a reasonable level of cycling fitness. Ride whatever bike you prefer.

Registration is not required, just show up and ride!
