Hey Sea Scouts, families, and boating buddies! As we gear up for adventures on the water, remember: Safety first, fun always! The BSA Sea Scouts program teaches us to be prepared and responsible mariners. Here's your quick checklist of 10 Boating Essentials to keep every trip smooth and secure:
1. Life Jackets (PFDs) – Wear 'em! One for every person on board, properly fitted.
2. Throwable Flotation Device – Type IV cushion or ring for emergencies.
3. Sound-Producing Device – Whistle, horn, or bell to signal for help.
4. Visual Distress Signals – Flares, flags, or lights (check expiration dates!).
5. Fire Extinguisher – Charged and accessible; know how to use it.
6. Navigation Lights – Working and ready for low visibility or night ops.
7. First Aid Kit – Stocked with bandages, meds, and seasickness remedies.
8. Anchor & Line – Right size for your vessel to hold steady.
9. Bilge Pump or Bailer – Keep water out and stay afloat!
