On October 7, the Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, a day that recalls both a historic victory and the enduring power of this beloved prayer.

The feast originated after the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. A Christian fleet faced a much larger Ottoman navy that threatened Europe. Pope St. Pius V called on the faithful to pray the Rosary, entrusting the outcome to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Against the odds, the Christian forces prevailed. In thanksgiving, the pope established the feast of Our Lady of Victory, later renamed Our Lady of the Rosary.

Beyond the historical event, the feast invites Catholics to rediscover the Rosary itself. Through the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous Mysteries, the prayer leads us to meditate on the life of Christ with Mary. It is simple enough for anyone to pray, yet profound enough to form a lifelong habit of contemplation and trust.

On this day, the Church encourages the faithful to take up the beads with renewed devotion—whether in family prayer, personal meditation, or community gatherings. Our Lady of the Rosary continues to intercede for peace, conversion, and the needs of the world, just as she did at Lepanto.

Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us!
