Mother of Sorrows, ora pro nobis.

September opens with a woman who had spent nearly a lifetime waiting for one moment. Saint Anna the Prophetess had known marriage, widowhood, age, and the long passage of years, yet her heart remained fixed upon God. She made the Temple her home, filling her days with fasting and prayer, watching for the Messiah while generations came and went around her. Then one ordinary day, Mary and Joseph entered carrying a Child, and Anna knew that everything she had been waiting for was before her.

How beautiful that Anna recognized Jesus while He was still small enough to rest in His Mother’s arms. Others saw a young family bringing their firstborn to the Temple. Anna saw the redemption of Jerusalem. A lifetime of prayer had taught her eyes to recognize God when He came quietly. And beside her stood Our Lady, herself carrying promises she could not yet fully see, presenting to the Father the Son who had been entrusted to her.

On September 1st, we stand at the doorway of a month given to Our Lady of Sorrows, moving toward September 15th and the Mother beneath the Cross. Anna met Mary near the beginning, with Jesus held safely against her heart; the Church will soon ask us to contemplate Mary years later, standing before that same Son crucified. Between those two moments lies an entire life of trusting what God has promised.

Saint Anna teaches us to become people who can wait without allowing our hearts to grow cold. Some prayers are answered quickly. Others accompany us through years, losses, changing seasons, and lives that look very different from what we once imagined. Keep watch. Keep praying. Christ is nearer than we know.

Saint Anna the Prophetess, pray for us.
Our Lady of Sorrows, teach us to wait faithfully for your Son.

With Hurricane Season upon us… Be filled with Christ’s peace, wonder and awe ❤️‍🔥🫶🏼⚔️🪽🕊️

Psalm 29:3–4: “The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic.”

Job 37:5: “God thunders wondrously with his voice; he does great things that we cannot comprehend.”

Psalm 18:13: “The Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice, hail stones and coals of fire.”

1 Samuel 7:10: “While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites.”

Zechariah 10:1: “Ask the Lord for rain in the springtime; it is the Lord who sends the thunderstorms. He gives showers of rain to all people, and plants of the field to everyone.”

Job 37:5–6 & 13: After noting that God “thunders wondrously with his voice,” the passage states that He commands the rain to “be a mighty downpour.” Verse 13 explicitly notes that God brings these storms “whether for correction or for his land or for love.”

Psalm 18:6 & 13: “In my distress I called to the Lord... From his temple he heard my voice... The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded.”

Psalm 81:7: “In distress you called, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder...”

John 12:28–29: When God the Father speaks from heaven to glorify His name, the crowd stands by and hears it, remarking that “it had thundered.”

This connects to the ancient Hebrew understanding found in the Talmud (Berakhot 59b), which teaches that thunder was created to “straighten the crookedness of the heart,” serving as a awe-inspiring blessing that realigns a person’s focus toward God’s majesty and love.

The traditional Hebrew blessing (bracha) recited immediately upon hearing thunder focuses on God’s raw power and sovereignty over the world. According to Jewish law (Halakha), it should be stated within one to two seconds of hearing the clap.

To all the holy women who’ve cried for conversion of hearts, God sees your tears! St. Monica, ora pro nobis.

Today is the feast of St. Monica: the mother of St. Augustine, one of the most influential saints in Church history.

Before he became the Saint we know, he spent most of his time breaking his Catholic mother's heart. Maybe you're a parent who can relate.

My sister painted this image of her. In traditional iconography, Mary is often shown at the foot of the cross as if cradling a baby, but with empty arms. My sister depicted Monica the same way: arms empty, praying for the conversion of her son.

For years, Monica followed him, worked behind the scenes to connect him with holy people, and above all, prayed for him.

The fact that her feast day falls the day before Augustine's is no accident. The reason we have a St. Augustine is BECAUSE we had a St. Monica. She gave birth to him a second time, through her prayers and tears.

She died a happy woman. In his Confessions, Augustine describes the two of them standing at a window, looking out over a garden, talking about what heaven would be like. His mother turned to him:

"Son… I do not know why I am still here. I did have one reason for wanting to live a little longer: to see you become a Catholic Christian before I died. God has lavished his gifts on me in that respect… So what am I doing here?"

Within days she was gone. Her last request:

"One thing only I ask you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord wherever you may be."

Monica's persistence is a reminder of a few things:

1.) Nothing matters more than the holiness of our children. Nothing. How we raise them needs to actually reflect that.
2.) The prayers of a holy mom (and dad) WORK.
3.) If you're a praying parent, never give up hope. Ever. Even if you don't die with the consolation Monica had, your prayers for your children don't stop in this life.

As a bishop told her while she wept for Augustine: "it is not possible that the son of these tears should perish."

God can't ignore a mother's tears.

St. Monica, pray for us!
