*UPDATE*- after our amazing neighbors waited for hours, animal control took 4 of the dogs and left one puppy out there. As of 5:30pm when i went to look for them, pup has not been spotted since last night. Please be on the lookout for these babies at the Palmdale shelter, and keep your eye out for the remaining pup if you are in the area.

Hello SoCal friends, this is a Hail Mary given the quantity of dogs in need of a roof over their heads literally everywhere (spay/neuter your freaking animals PLEASE), but these dogs are at the marked location just east of Mt. Emma/Cheseboro intersection in Littlerock/Palmdale, Los Angeles County as of 6:50pm. Efforts are in place to get them food immediately, but they are clearly in urgent need of foster/adopters. Our 5 livestock guard dogs and 100 something birds make placement here impossible. In the 17 minutes it took to make this post (while doing night checks for our own residents) one of the puppies has already been killed by traffic. Please reach out if you can help or share if you can’t.tce te

This week’s SoCal heat wave has me extra thankful for our new pool party feature in the Pink Pony Club coop šŸ–ļø! When kindly offered to send us one of their solar fountain pumps last month, I was intrigued but frankly skeptical—I’ve tried similar products in the past but they only worked for a week or so. This one has been up and running for three weeks and so far I’m super impressed! The solar panel is attached by a long cord, so I was able to place the pool out of the sun (which will waaayyy delay algae growth) without compromising function. I’ve cleaned it out once so far, which took all of 30 seconds and was only a preventative maintenance clean. Our peacocks and chickens love it, it creates a lovely evaporative cooling effect, and obviously the vibes are ✨immaculate ✨. I’m already dreaming about building more of these for each of our 8 flocks!

If you’re interested in one of your own you can find them through their IG or on Amazon—look up ā€œPoposoap Solar Bird Bath Fountain.ā€ While kindly donated ours, this is not a paid review and is my honest opinion/experience with their product.

Massachusetts is the first U.S. state to take action against the practice many people now call male chick shredding.

In the egg industry, male chicks are killed shortly after they hatch. They do not lay eggs. They are not raised for meat. So they are seen as useless. Millions are killed every year in the United States.

Most Americans never see this. It happens inside hatcheries, out of public view.

Lawmakers in Massachusetts passed a law that connects egg sales in the state to the future use of technology that can identify a chick’s s*x before it hatches. The goal is simple. If producers can detect male embryos early, they can avoid bringing them into the world just to kill them hours later.

This is not an instant statewide ban. It depends on technology becoming widely available and practical. But it is the first clear legal step in the country aimed at reducing this specific practice.

For many people, this is about cruelty. It is about whether convenience and low egg prices should come before the lives of newborn animals.

Massachusetts has opened the door. The question now is whether other states will follow.

Last night marked one year of knowing, loving, and admiring Dahlia. One year and twenty days since the Eaton fire took her leg, part of her wing, >70% of her healthy skin (all of which has healed beautifully!), and her mobility. One year and twenty days since an almost incomparably devastating disaster also became her ticket to ride out of the hellhole she’d been forced to call home.

We take these babies in as family and we make a promise to give them their happily ever after, No Matter What. It is hard, expensive work, but it is equally rewarding, especially in a world that seems so upside down as of late. If you’re able to contribute towards Dahlia’s ongoing coziness and care, or towards the wellbeing of the 100 something other sweet babies who share her paradise here, wish list links and Venmo/Paypal links are in our bio ā¤ļø.

Forever thankful for , , , and , who are the true heroes behind her initial rescue, who guided her miraculous recovery, and who still sponsors her to this day 🄹🄰. It takes a village and boy is Dahlia grateful for hers šŸ¤—.

I buried my friend Queenie Bee tonight. She came here three years ago with a severely slipped and set tendon. For most of those years she was vibrant and mobile on her ā€œgoodā€ leg. She slowed down this fall, as that other leg grew weary bearing so much strain, and we knew our time was limited—as it always is with every bird an creature I meet—but her persistence and resilience made it easy to forget that one of her morning/night check-ins would be our last. This morning she dug into her breakfast; this afternoon, to my naive shock, she was gone. I found her resting peacefully, as if she’d just tucked in for a nap. That sounds very clichĆ©, but I’d wager that anyone who runs a sanctuary can tell you it’s not always so.

I’m grateful to the Good Samaritan on the horse ranch where she previously lived, who found her hobbling and starving and knew she needed a softer landing and reached out. I’m deeply sorry I couldn’t give her more time. I hope I didn’t fail her and I won’t self-flagellate (and I really don’t want pity or consolation—please!) but I’ll never stop trying to do better by these babies. I’m grateful to anyone and everyone who doesn’t think I’m a masochistic idiot for loving these sweet angels who are often dealt such a hard and brief hand in this thing we call life. I’m grateful to anyone who doesn’t see that as reason to ā€œpivotā€ to an animal that’s more widely acknowledged as ā€œworth saving.ā€

I find it terribly hard to be in a world that is so ineffably cruel to animals that it’s more acceptable to systematically slaughter them than it is to talk about the fact that we slaughter them. I find it so isolating. I find it hard to be in a world of human beings that are so often (especially lately) so cruel to one another.

QB is buried under a new peach tree (thank you Lori and Jon!). I can’t wait til it blossoms. I’ll thank her with every flower. I don’t expect anyone to read this far, but if you have the opportunity tomorrow or this week to be (needlessly, wildly, anonymously, even disproportionately) kind toward someone, or some animal, who crosses your path, I hope you’ll take it. I think the world really really needs it. Now and always.
