Being in the migratory pathways brings some unique visitors to SLRSP.! How cool!!

You never know what bird you might see at South Llano River State Park!

This Kentucky Warbler was spotted at the Agarita Bird Blind. Spring migration is in full swing, and there is always a chance of seeing an unusual or unlikely species during this time! SLRSP bird blinds are a great place for exciting observations and are made possible with the help of Friends of South Llano River State Park and our host volunteers.

A special thank you to park visitor Alan Oliver from Kerrville, TX, for capturing and sharing this photo with us. Happy Birding, everyone!

Did You Know? South Llano River State Park is a spring migration hotspot. Look for Painted Buntings and other returning songbirds along the river and in the bird blinds.

Another interesting fact is that the park is home to one of the largest turkey roosts in Central Texas. Turkeys roost from Oct. 1 through March 31. The day-use area is only open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during these months, so that humans don’t disturb the roosting turkeys.

The suet seems to be a good morning snack for these two! The bird blinds at the SLRSP are maintained by volunteers and funded by the Friends group. If you want to help with supporting the bird blinds, visit our webpage to donate, become a member, or join our governing board. Spring is quickly approaching, it is a good time to be outside!

The ice has mostly receded and it is a great day for a hike at the South Llano River State Park. Came across this fantastic moss. A Side-fruited Crisp Moss, this eye catching bryophyte was a neat sight. If you are interested in helping us at the Friends group we are looking for people who love this hill country park and want to support it's mission. Message us here for more information.

SLRSP PARK ALERT (1/27/26): Headquarters Delayed Opening

Due to current conditions and expected overnight temperatures, SLRSP Headquarters will open at 10:00am, January 27, 2026. The park will remain open prior to Headquarters opening, for Day Use and Primitive Camping. If enjoying the park while Headquarters is closed, we ask that visitors please utilize the Self-Pay Station.

Please continue to monitor the status of our park through our Facebook and Instagram accounts, as well as our website Park Alerts. Please come prepared with all necessary supplies for being outdoors in extremely cold conditions and do not attempt to travel in unsafe road conditions!

As a reminder, our Water and Electric Sites in the Camping Loop as well as our Walk-In Water Sites are currently closed for construction. Primitive camping is still available and accessible by a 1.5-mile hike. Please remember that there is no car camping, electric or water, and no fires are permitted at these sites.

To prevent critical pipe damage, spigots throughout the park will be left dripping before the freeze sets in. Please do not turn them off.

Stay safe and warm!!
