Good morning! Happy Memorial Day. Parade is at 10a

Come Join the Parade!

An idea for a Memorial Day parade came together late last week. Julesburg six-grader Wyatt, son of Marrissa McAllister, think about the nearing Memorial Day holiday and felt a deep, immediate need to do something more than just enjoy the day off. He wanted to truly honor the “heroic patriots who bravely rose up” and gave their lives for the nation.

Marrissa, knowing the holiday was fast approaching, saw the earnest fire in her son’s eyes. Despite the short notice, she agreed, recognizing that Memorial Day was a hallowed day to pay tribute to service members who serve and died. This was about ensuring the youth understood the true cost of freedom.

Working with determination, Wyatt and Marrissa made phone calls, relying on community connections and sheer enthusiasm. The response was immediate and overwhelming. They successfully arranged for the Ambulance service, the local firefighters, and the sheriff’s office to join.

Word spread quickly, but as this was the first, impromptu attempt and was organized on short notice, Wyatt and Marrissa knew they needed more participants to create a proper show of gratitude. They put out a call for others to join, hoping that more people would walk, ride their bikes, or drive their cars in the procession.

This Memorial Day, the line up for the parade honoring Veterans will be at 9:45 Monday morning at 10th and Cedar. It will be a perfect, spontaneous, and heartfelt demonstration of community pride, all thanks to a sixth grader’s determination. What a great way to start a new tradition!
