One of the best things WCCJ Rotary does is RYLA. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts where juniors in high school develop their skills as a leader while having fun and making connections. WCCJ sponsors student to attend This year we had one student from each school.

Take a look behind the scenes at one of WCCJ Rotary’s best projects...The Dictionary Project!

09/26/2024

The Webb City - Carl Junction Rotary Club has launched its annual Dictionary Project this week. This project is one of the organization’s local service projects to promote literacy in our communities.

In 1992, Annie Palmer, a housekeeper in Savannah, GA took her entire savings that she earned cleaning houses and bought 50 paperback dictionaries. She stood out on the corner in front of her modest home and passed them out to children on their way to school because she saw them going by day after day empty handed. They had no books. Mrs. Palmer learned the value of education the hard way. She had dropped out of school in the 9th grade when she became a mother. Many years later, at age 32, she returned to night school and earned her high school diploma. She died in 1999 but by that time she had accomplished her goal of providing a dictionary to every 3rd grader in her county. Just before her death a retired teacher and Rotarian in South Carolina had heard about Mrs. Palmer’s dictionaries and had taken up the crusade in her local Rotary Club. The program has spread from there all over the country in just a few short years.

Rotary’s motto is: “Service Above Self”.

WCCJ Rotary conducted our annual First Responder Appreciation event today, Wed Sept 11. This event originally started as a way to honor First Responders in conjunction with Sept 11 remembrances. About two years ago, we moved away from the ceremonial part and expanded the operation to showing our appreciation thru food. We built smash burger meals and then delivered them to responders throughout the area.
