🚒 Great news for Joplin!

The Joplin Fire Department has been selected to receive its first Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant from FEMA. The $800,000 federal grant, combined with a City contribution, will help fund six new firefighter positions for their first three years and allow the department to hire sooner than anticipated.

Joplin voters authorized these positions through Proposition Police and Fire earlier this year. As our call volume continues to grow, these firefighters will help us serve the community.

Interested in a lateral transfer? Applicants must have a Missouri EMT license and Firefighter I and II certifications. The department anticipates hiring for these lateral transfer positions in early February. Lateral transfers will complete a paid six-week finishing school at the JFD Fire Academy.

With the new police and fire pay plan anticipated early next year, we encourage experienced firefighters to consider continuing their careers with Joplin Fire. Apply at https://joplinmo.bamboohr.com/careers/30

Some of these mustaches haven’t seen a razor in over a decade. Meanwhile, the baby faces are getting ready to grow their first upper-lip shadows. Will the rivalry boil over before the big showdown?

💧 Thank you, Missouri American Water!

The Joplin Fire Department received a $1,000 grant today to support firefighter safety and public safety.

This year’s grant will help purchase protective hoods designed to reduce firefighters’ exposure to cancer-causing contaminants while fighting fires.

From your Joplin Professional Firefighters, thank you, Missouri American Water, for investing in the firefighters who serve our community!

🙏 The IAFF is saddened to announce the passing of General Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus Thomas H. “Tommy” Miller.

A second-generation fire fighter, Navy veteran, and lifelong union leader, Tommy served 37 years with the Indianapolis Fire Department. He went on to serve as president of the Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana, IAFF 8th District vice president, and General Secretary-Treasurer from 2010 until his retirement in 2016.

Tommy said he wanted to be remembered as someone who helped people. Across nearly five decades of service to our union, he did exactly that – improving the lives of countless fire fighters, retirees, and their families.

Our thoughts are with his wife, Barb; their children, Stephanie, Thomas, Joseph (Madison), and Claire; his grandson, Benjamin; and all who knew and loved him.
