Safe Kids Jasper, Newton, Barton, McDonald

Safe Kids Jasper, Newton, Barton, McDonald Safe Kids Worldwide® is a program that helps families and communities keep kids safe from injuries.

Safe Kids Newton/Jasper is led by The Alliance of Southwest Missouri, which provides dedicated and caring staff, operation support, and other resources to assist in achieving our common goal: keeping your kids safe. Based on the needs of the community, this coalition implements evidence-based programs, such as car-seat education, and safety workshops, that help parents and caregivers prevent childhood injuries.

What is your guess?
How hot do you think it is in this car?
It does not take long for a car to heat up. Always check the back seat for kiddos and fur babies!

Gary takes to the street with a giant thermometer to measure the temperature inside a car, and outside a car, and the responses were surprising.

Swimming can be a great form of exercise and relaxation, but it's important to take breaks
when you need them. Remind teens to get out of the water when they start feeling tired or
winded or when the water starts to look rough and choppy.

Signs like ‘No Diving,’ ‘Rip Currents,’ and ‘Life Jacket Required’ are there for a reason. Talk to
your teen about looking for and following posted signs and choosing their swimming spot
carefully. Ask them to always swim in an area with a lifeguard on duty if it’s an
option.

In 2021 emergency rooms nationwide treated an estimated 193,450 burn injuries involving many types of consumer products, from kitchen and cooking products to fireworks and space heaters.
Children under 10 years old are especially vulnerable and accounted for 26 percent of burn injuries treated in 2021. Nearly half of those injuries were to the upper extremities, from shoulders to fingers, and more than a third specifically to the hands and fingers.
The vast majority of burn incidents are preventable. Here are a few tips to keep safe:
• Candles: Use flashlights instead of candles. If using candles, do not burn them on or near anything that can catch fire, never leave them burning unattended, and extinguish candles when leaving the room and before sleeping.
• Cooking Care: Keep children away from the cooking area, and keep flammable items, like potholders and paper or plastic bags, away from the stove and oven.
• All Clothing Burns: Keep all clothing away from flames and ignition sources. Loose clothing can catch fire easily.
• Space Heater Safety: Keep hands and fingers away and give the space heater some space – at least three feet. Loose flammable items in close proximity to a space heater can catch fire.
• If You Smoke: Smoking materials can ignite clothing. Don’t smoke while drowsy; safely extinguish smoking material.

The first week of February is Burn Awareness week.

Talk to your kids about different types of burns and how to avoid burn injuries.

Parents, be sure to childproof electrical outlets and appliances, check water temperatures, use the back burner on the stove, and use oven mitts! With up and down temperatures some may be using space heaters, be sure to keep flammable materials away from them! Be sure to blow out any candles and keep matches away from kiddos.

These are just a few examples, for more burn awareness information, visit our website!
