The City of Jonestown is an official International Dark Sky Community. The City of Jonestown Dark Sky Advocacy believes the natural beauty of a dark sky is an expression of our appeal as a pleasant community dedicated to order, harmony and pride. Therefore, our mission is to obtain Dark Sky Community designation from the International Dark-Sky Association by following their Guidelines and Applica
tion Process. As part of that pursuit, we are committed to:
1) Engage in outreach and educate residents, new and existing commercial businesses, construction builders and publicly owned lighting providers within the City of Jonestown on the importance of controlling the growth of light pollution to:
· preserve the beauty of the natural night sky · increase safety
· reduce energy waste
· save money on energy costs
· preserve wildlife and ecosystems
· benefit human health
· preserve night sky heritage for future generations.
2) Provide resources and advocacy to residents, new and existing commercial businesses, construction builders, and publicly owned lighting providers within the City of Jonestown on obtaining responsible, beautiful and functional outdoor lighting, which is in alignment with the International Dark-Sky Association’s lighting standards and the City of Jonestown’s currently proposed lighting ordinance.
3) Foster and encourage exceptional community dedication, compliance, and continued adherence to the City of Jonestown’s currently proposed lighting ordinance, which supports a dark sky.
4) Identify “Night Sky Viewing Sites” within the City of Jonestown and communicate their locations to the residents and visitors for enjoyment and appreciation of Jonestown’s night sky.
5) Establish processes to maintain Dark Sky Community designation through the International Dark-Sky Association and preserve the designation in perpetuity by conducting continual night sky programs and annual reporting.
