October 7, 1780

Kings Mountain

After a 330-mile march through difficult weather and rugged country, the Patriot forces reached Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780.

The Overmountain men and other Patriot militia surrounded Major Patrick Ferguson’s Loyalist force on the mountain. The battle began at 3 o’clock that afternoon and lasted just over an hour.

Ferguson was killed, and the Loyalist force was defeated.

For the men who had gathered at Sycamore Shoals on the Watauga River, crossed the mountains, and pursued Ferguson through the Carolina backcountry, the long march had reached its destination.

October 7, 1780 — Kings Mountain.

October 6, 1780

The Overmountain men reached Cowpens, South Carolina, on October 6, 1780, where they joined with South Carolina militia in their pursuit of British Colonel Patrick Ferguson.

That evening, the Patriot forces gathered at Cowpens. About 900 of the best-armed and best-mounted men were selected to continue the pursuit.

They set out late that night, pushing forward through the rain toward Kings Mountain.

October 5, 1780

The Overmountain men reached Alexander’s Ford on the Green River in North Carolina as they continued their pursuit of British Colonel Patrick Ferguson.

There, Colonel Edward Lacey of South Carolina brought news of Ferguson’s whereabouts. The Patriots learned that Ferguson had turned east rather than continuing south.

The pursuit would continue toward Cowpens the following day.

Two days later, they would reach Kings Mountain.

On This Day — October 2, 1780

The Overmountain men were on their march toward Kings Mountain when they encamped at Bedford's Hill in North Carolina on October 1 and 2.

Heavy rain kept the Patriot army there for two nights as the men dried out and prepared for the battle they expected was coming. During this time, Colonel William Campbell was chosen to command the combined force.

In just five days, they would reach Kings Mountain.

A new marker honoring Sherrill Station will be dedicated on Saturday, October 10, at 10:00 AM at Philadelphia Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Limestone, TN.
