📊 Tennessee Youth & Young Adults: 2026 Data Snapshot

How are Tennessee's children, youth, and young adults doing?

According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation's 2026 KIDS COUNT Data Book:
📍 Tennessee ranks 37th nationally in overall child well-being.
📍 19% of children live in poverty.
📍 29% live in households with a high housing cost burden.
📍 69% of fourth graders are not proficient in reading.
📍 72% of eighth graders are not proficient in math.
📍 35% of children live in single-parent families.

While Tennessee continues to make progress in education, many children, youth, and families still face economic, health, and community challenges that can impact long-term success.

Data helps tell the story, but it is what we do with that information that creates change. Together, we can strengthen supports, increase opportunities, and ensure all Tennessee youth and young adults have the chance to thrive.

🚙 Mallory’s Road to Success

Balancing the responsibilities of raising two children, while building a career, was never easy, and reliable transportation was one of the biggest obstacles standing in Mallory’s way.

Without a dependable car, getting to work on time or being available for her children’s school and activities was a constant struggle. That all changed when Mallory was introduced to the Cars to Work Program. This initiative provides vehicles to individuals who need reliable transportation to commute to work or training opportunities.

As a Peer Recovery Specialist, Mallory dedicates her life to supporting others who are working through recovery. The vehicle she received through the Russell County Cars to Work Program through the Southwest Virginia Workforce Development Board. Funded by a Wellsprings Foundation IMPACT grant, the car has given her the stability and independence she needed—not just for her career, but for her family’s future.

For Mallory, the impact of the program went far beyond convenience—it arrived at a moment when she needed it most.

As she shared: “This program helped me be able to get back and forth to work, community service, and do everything I need to do for my lease on a new life. This couldn’t have come at a better time. I had almost 2 years clean and a good job, that I still have, and my car was messed up, not even wanting to drive. I also am repairing my credit, and there was no other way I could have gotten a car.”

By removing the barrier of unreliable transportation, the Cars to Work Program gave Mallory the tools to succeed—both as a professional and as a mother. Mallory’s story is a reminder that sometimes, a set of car keys represents much more than just a vehicle. For her, it represents opportunity, independence, and hope.
