Last week our speaker was Adam Dickson, Director of the Langston Centre in Johnson City and long-time Alderman of Jonesborough. He explained the background of the school, an all-Black secondary school from 1893-1965. It was the high school for the Booker T. Washington School in Jonesborough where students attended through the 7th grade, then moved on to Langston.
In the 50's and 60's it was a sports powerhouse in the region. Opening in 2019, the Langston Centre operates with a three-fold approach: Respect the Past, Recognize the Present, and Realize the Future. Adam states "We are a multicultural facility focused on community engagement through arts, education, and leadership." Our own Pauline Douglas is very engaged in the Langston Education Arts and Development, Inc. A major event for the Centre is held each year - the Festival of Nations. This event, a partnership with Northeast State Community College's English as a Second Language program, exposes our region to the multicultural variety of our community.
The Centre events are available online at https://www.johnsoncitytn.org/business_detail_T5_R43.php.
Their hours are Monday - Friday: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., Saturday: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
