Today we stop for a moment to remember those who went before us. None of us can even imagine the hell that was D-Day. 80 years ago today we lost 2,501 young American men on the beaches of France. May their sacrifices forever be honored and remembered.

Today marks the 80th anniversary of American forces landing on the beaches of Normandy for what became known as D-Day. Nearly 160,000 Allied troops landed in Normandy that day, and of those, 73,000 were from the U.S. As we celebrate the anniversary for this monumental military operation, DAV honors and pays tribute to the brave individuals who were involved in the invasion that eventually lead to the liberation of France from N**i control and eventually an Allied victory in Europe.

Had a professor ask about my IR flag yesterday. I have one of the ones I wore while in Afghanistan on my backpack. It gave me an idea to share it here with everyone as well.

What is the IR flag and why in the world is it backwards!?

The Infrared Retroreflective (IR) Flag is an attachable patch that enables the identification of friendly forces. The flag becomes visible in dark environments when observed with near-infrared vision systems, such as Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) and near-infrared illuminators.

When worn on the right sleeve, it is considered proper to reverse the design so that the union is at the observer's right to suggest that the flag is flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward.

Here is your military trivia for the day! Kudos to Dr. Kyle Gustafson for giving me the idea.
