🌿💧 WHEN THE STREET BECOMES A SPONGE

A bioswale beside a street can look like a simple planted landscape. But beneath the vegetation, it performs an important piece of urban infrastructure.

Instead of sending every drop of rainwater immediately into the drainage system, bioswales slow, capture, filter and infiltrate stormwater. Water flowing from the road enters the planted depression, where soil, gravel and vegetation help retain sediments and pollutants while allowing water to gradually infiltrate or continue through the drainage system.

This becomes increasingly important as cities face more intense rainfall, soil sealing and pressure on drainage networks.

The real value is systemic: the same space can provide stormwater management, groundwater recharge, biodiversity, urban cooling and a more attractive public realm.

🌱 The lesson is simple:
Water should not always be removed from the city. Sometimes, the city should learn how to receive it.

🍾 Glass Recycling

✅ Accepted Items:
• Clothes
• Tires, limit 8, no rims
• Basketball goals
• Furniture, including chairs, beds, tables, printers, mattresses, TVs, computers and more
• Appliances, including dryers, washers, stoves, water heaters, refrigerators and more. Freon and compressors must be removed
• Paint cans with all paint removed, lids removed and residue completely dry

❌ Items Not Accepted:
• Yard waste or limbs
• Tractor or semi tires
• Hazmat materials, including oils, fluids, batteries, flammables, corrosive materials, automotive parts, motors and transmissions
• Remodeling or construction materials. Single pieces are acceptable

🌱 Free paper lawn bags will be available for pickup from Keep Jonesboro Beautiful while supplies last.

City staff will also be on site to assist with unloading items into the dumpster.

Consider a broader approach to handling stormwater runoff. Water can be used to do beautiful things and help the local environment.

Got a puddle-prone yard? Turn it into a beautiful, low-maintenance habitat for bees, butterflies and birds — while cutting flood risk and keeping pollution out of local waterways. Some cities and states even offer rebates to help cover the cost.
