"In January 2015 our foster parent journey began with the arrival of a seven week old baby girl and her 5 1/2 year-old brother. The two of them arrived to our home late at night via a case aid. When they walked into our home, the kids were crying, tired and hungry. They had been moved from their third home into what would be their final home. To our amazement, all of their belongings - clothing, stuffed animals, toys, and medication - all arrived in a black trash bag….
Fostering is a journey which is a hard to describe to non-foster parents. We didn't need sympathy, we wanted empathy. We needed information to better understand the foster care system. We needed better communication with and between our case workers and adoption agency. We needed a tribe to lean on and help support us along the way.
Behaviors which Melissa and I naively thought would get better simply with the stability of adoption and love, did not get better. In fact, behaviors seemed to escalate. So, we set upon a journey to learn about trauma and prenatal substance exposure, and realized very quickly we would've done things very different over the last four years, had we known.
The Love Moves Us family gatherings have exposed Melissa and I to Dr. Karin Purvis and TBRI, Trust - Based Relational Intervention. This, was our family's true turning point! This is when real healing started; healing in our relationships with our adapted children, healing in our relationship with our biological daughter and healing in our marriage."
