The Illinois Trucking Index just jumped 8 points to 108.00 — the strongest signal of a growing freight economy we've seen in a while.

What carriers told us this week:
- Load volumes are holding: 50% reported HIGHER volumes last week, and 40% expect their loads to increase this week.
- The outlook for the rest of 2026 is bright: 6 in 10 carriers expect freight volumes to finish the year HIGHER than now (13% say more than 5% higher).
- Question of the week bonus: 17% of carriers now use ITA's own Drug & Alcohol Testing program, up from just 3% two years ago.

Roll with law enforcement for a great cause.

On Saturday, October 10, the Tinley Park Truck Convoy rolls out of the Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre in Tinley Park, and ITA is proud to help spread the word. It's a fundraising and awareness event created through a partnership between the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois and the trucking industry, and every dollar raised helps Special Olympics Illinois athletes train and compete in year-round sports.

Bring your rig. Semis, truck/trailer combos, fire trucks, dump trucks, flat beds, buses, large tow trucks, landscaping trucks, and large box trucks are all welcome. Registration is $100 per truck and includes an official Convoy goody bag (while supplies last) plus lunch for every driver.

New tool alert — with a catch.

Google Maps now has Large Vehicle Routing, designed to help trucks and large vehicles plan routes around vehicle size, weight, and roadway restrictions. It could be a genuinely useful planning tool for your fleet.

But here's the catch from IDOT: it does NOT replace ITAP. If your trucks run under an oversize or overweight permit in Illinois, you still must use the Illinois Transportation Automated Permit System and follow the approved permit route IDOT gives you. Use Google's routing for general planning — then file and run the permit route through ITAP like always.

Know a driver who shines every day? It's time to get their name in the running.

ITA's Driver of the Month nominations open October 1 and run through December 15. Send in as many nominations as you want — 12 drivers will be selected for 2026, and from those 12, one Driver of the Year will be chosen in January 2027.

Linda Blisset wants you to know the system is fixed: last year's judging hiccup (incomplete entries) has been corrected, and judging is fully redacted, so names and company info are stripped before judges see your nomination. Include everything that makes your driver stand out, plus the mandatory current MVR and a copy of their CDL.

A company can only win three of the twelve slots, so other companies get a real shot too. Start lining up your nominations — the form goes live October 1 at www.iltrucking.org.

Trucking 101 on October 7 is built for them. It's a full-day, plain-English walkthrough of the industry: CDLs, Hours of Service, federal and state regulations, the acronyms everyone throws around, plus hands-on time with a real truck and trailer alongside the Illinois State Police. New hires, dispatchers, office staff, family members joining the business — anyone who wants to speak the language of trucking with confidence.
