Johnstown Slavic Festival

Johnstown Slavic Festival The goal of the Johnstown Slavic Festival Committee is to create a new program that educates residents of the Johnstown region about their heritage.

From 1880 until 1920, thousands of Slavic immigrants came to Johnstown to find employment in the area’s mills and mines. By 1920, 25 percent of Johnstown’s residents were of Slavic descent. They created a rich network of churches and social clubs to support their way of life and culture. Johnstown went through tough economic times in the 1970s and ‘80s, and many people were forced to leave the com

munity. Johnstown’s ethnic organizations suffered. Today, many young people want to know about their ethnic heritage, and the culture and history of their Slavic ancestors. We plan to present authentic Slavic music, Slavic folk dance performances, homemade Slavic food, children’s learning areas, educational speakers and exhibits, workshops, and ethnic vendors. A full day of entertainment and education is planned.

Congratulations to the 3 Slavic Nations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Czech Republic on their qualification for this summers World Cup in the USA!
While all 3 countries have a small population, Bosnia 3.1 million, Croatia 3.8 million and Czech 10.5, you can fully expect all 3 nations to represent our Slavic roots well!
Croatia has finished 2nd and 3rd at the last 2 World Cup’s.
Bosnia just knocked out perennial powerhouse Italy to make the WC.
Czech Republic knocked out traditional power Denmark to punch their ticket to the USA.
Best of luck to all 3 teams!!
