The Irish game of hurling is one of the oldest field games in the world. Hurling was first referenced in literature dating back over 3,000 years ago to the year 1272 BC. Even the old Irish Brehon Laws provided compensation for any injuries incurred during the game. Under British rule, the game was banned on multiple occasions, but during the Gaelic revival of the late 19th century, the Gaelic Athletic Association was founded in Thurles, County Tipperary. The organisation spread like wildfire. Within 18 months, the GAA had over 50,000 members and 400 clubs. The GAA is far more than just a sporting organisation, it is a symbol of Irish identity.

🍺 On this day, 24th September 1725, Arthur Guinness is traditionally said to have been born in County Kildare.

His exact birth date remains uncertain, but his place in Irish history is considerably clearer.

Guinness began brewing at Leixlip before moving his operation to Dublin in 1759. There, at St James’s Gate, he secured the famous 9,000-year lease on the brewery site.

What began as an 18th-century Dublin brewery would eventually develop into one of the most internationally recognised names associated with Ireland.
Arthur Guinness died on 23rd January 1803 and was buried at Oughterard, County Kildare.

The O’Briens of Thomond, who once ruled much of north Munster, founded this medieval Franciscan friary. It grew quickly into a huge foundation, with 350 friars and a famed school of 600 pupils by 1375. It was the very last school of Catholic theology to survive the Reformation. The building contains an exceptional wealth of 15th & 16th century sculptures carved in the local hard limestone, including one of St Francis himself displaying the stigmata. An arch between the nave and transept bears a remarkable image of Christ with his hands bound.

This Cistercian monastery was founded in the 12th century by monks from Mellifont Abbey under the patronage of the local ruling family, the MacDermotts. It was one of the most powerful of the early Cistercian foundations in Ireland and among the foremost in Connacht. Cromwellian forces wreaked devastation when they occupied the abbey in 1659. It was further mutilated during the following centuries, when it was used to accommodate a military garrison. Despite all the violence it has suffered over the centuries, Boyle Abbey is well preserved.
