Much of the early restoration work on the John Ludwig home wasn't visible to passersby (stabilization of interior walls that had sustained long term water damage and were in danger of collapse). But not anymore! After a new roof two summers ago, this summer saw the completion of the second phase of work - restoration and/or replacement of all windows, exterior trim scraped and painted, and - the crown jewel - the recreation of the beautiful Queen Anne porch, down to the original colors!

A huge thank you to the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, Johnstown's Vision Together 2025, and a City of Johnstown façade enhancement grant for providing funds that, when matched by a Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission grant, allowed for this work to be completed. And thank you to Dave Hurst and The Tribune-Democrat for a wonderful article on the progress we've made.

THE PRESS, Philadelphia, June 15, 1889. An illustration, "In the Hospital of the Red Cross Society at Johnstown--The Tender Work of Miss Clara Barton & Her Unselfish Associates." which includes an inset illustration of Clara Barton.

The front page of the paper had coverage of the recovery efforts from the tragic Johnstown Flood, with: "Work Stopped By Raid" "Johnstown Laborers Refuse to Work During the Downpours" and "Trying to Number The Dead".

Clara arrived with Red Cross workers from Washington, D.C., on June 5, 1889, just five days after the flood occurred. She later described this saying, "I cannot lose the memory of that first walk on the first day... the wading in mud, climbing over [debris]... the getting around bodies of dead animals and often people were being borne away. The smoldering fires and drizzling rain."

After four months at the site, the disaster relief operation became the most celebrated effort in the early history of the American Red Cross.
