Do you love wine, beer, or maple syrup? If so, take note! Spotted lanternfly (SLF) is an invasive pest that feeds on many plants including grapes, hops, and maple trees – and we need your help to find it in NY. Finding infestations when they’re small is the key to preventing SLF from becoming widespread.

Keep an eye out for dime-sized black nymphs this time of year (red nymphs and adults begin to appear in July), and report any sightings at https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/a08d60f6522043f5bd04229e00acdd63

New Yorkers may be seeing more dead fish in the water this spring than in past years. The winter of 2020-2021 created optimal conditions for winter kills, which usually occur in shallow waterbodies with aquatic plant growth.

Winterkill occurs when snow that accumulates on the ice reduces the amount of light penetrating through the water, inhibiting the photosynthesis cycle in plants and reducing the amount of oxygen (a byproduct of the cycle) available to fish and other organisms. The problem is exacerbated when fish die, as the decomposition process also consumes any available oxygen in the pond.

To report a fish kill contact your Regional DEC Fisheries Office: https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7927.html

Did you know?!

Do you know your cones? In New York, you can find several native and non-native tree species that grow cones, AKA “conifers”, and we’ve pictured just a selection of some of them here.

But there are a lot of mis-cone-ceptions about conifers! Check out the facts below and file them away to impress your pals on your next woods walk:

- Not all cones are pinecones. Pinecones only come from pine trees, but there are also spruces, firs, hemlocks, and other trees that grow cones.

- And not all conifers are evergreens. In NY, we have the tamarack, a tree with cones that drops all its needles each year.

- A cone holds seeds, but it is not a fruit. Conifers are gymnosperms, a group of seed-producing plants that don’t make fruit. The word gymnosperm comes from Greek roots and means “naked seed”.
