For this week’s meeting we enjoyed breakfast and a tour of the beautiful, remodeled home of Johnston Rotary Member Kurt Mumm, which won the Pella People’s Choice Award in the October Home Builders Association of Greater Des Moines Tour of Remodeled Homes. This home was remodeled by Compelling Homes, which is owned by another Johnston Rotary Member, Rusty Green.

Last week, we learned about The Mobility Cart Distribution Program, a collaborative effort between Pathways to Hope Africa and Mobility Worldwide, which is restoring dignity and transforming lives of individuals with very limited physical mobility across Uganda. Our speaker, Johnston Rotary Past President Bruce Young, will be traveling to Uganda in January with other Rotarians to support this program by delivering mobility carts with help from Bugiri, Uganda Rotary Club. Yesterday, we purchased food and prepared a meal for families staying at Ronald McDonald House at MercyOne Children's Hospital.

Community service is a priority at Johnston Rotary. Some of our projects need many volunteers, while others need only a few. What matters is finding ways to serve and make a difference in our community. We’re proud to lend a hand wherever and whenever we can. 💙

Last week the Rotary Club of Johnston competed in a "friendly" Iowa - Iowa State competition to donate personal care items for the Johnston Partnership's food pantry. Personal care items are always needed. We gathered and donated 274 pounds of personal care items for the Johnston Partnership and those in need. (Oh, and by the way, Iowa won this year.) We also had a spot for UNI/Other/and Don't Care.
The food pantry ALWAYS needs and appreciates personal care items such as soap, detergent, dish soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toilet paper, baby wipes, diapers, etc. Think about what you use at home. Everyone needs that stuff!
The Rotary Club of Johnston has numerous service projects and charities it supports throughout the year. Come check us out at Hyperion in Johnston at 7 a.m. on Tuesday mornings.
"Service above self" is our mantra.

Today, we heard an inspiring message from CEO Mary Hunter about Goodwill of Central Iowa’s mission of “Making Purposeful Employment Possible for All” and how donations fund its Skills Training, Employment Support and other services. We also learned about the ShopGoodwill app, which can be used to shop and bid on items such as inexpensive books to jewelry worth $1000s of dollars, which have been donated.

Last week our speaker, Eddie Andrews, gave a non-political talk with fun stories about how interesting, challenging, and transformational it was to run for Iowa Governor. He said the best thing coming out of this experience was after meeting and talking with thousands of Iowans it makes one a better person.
