Martie & Diane Floyd have been chosen as this year’s Pioneer’s of the Year. Martie was born to R.D. and Evelyn (Winger) Floyd and has lived in Stanton County his entire life. After graduating from Johnson High School, Martie attended Kansas University graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in political science and history. While there he met Diane Nonken. Diane was born to Ray and Doris Nonken and lived in eastern Kansas before graduating from Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Junior College. She then attended Kansas University graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. Martie and Diane married in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1970 and moved back to Stanton County in 1971.
Martie began farming as a fourth-generation farmer alongside his father and brother, Gary. Martie and Gary started M&G Farms 50 years ago. Along with growing the farm and running a feedyard, Martie served on many boards in the community and beyond. Martie has served on the school board, hospital board and various United Methodist Church boards. Martie was also in the inaugural class of the Kansas Agricultural Rural Leadership Class. He served on many cooperative boards, including the Johnson Coop, Skyland Grain, Pioneer Electric, Sunflower Electric and Farmland. With all of his work on the cooperative boards, Martie was selected to be in the Kansas Cooperative Hall of Fame in 2021. Martie served as Stanton County commissioner and is currently the chairman of Legacy Financial.
Along with raising their two children, Chris and Jennifer, Diane also has served in many volunteer capacities and boards. Diane served as the Sunflower 4-H club leader and the Stanton County Extension Board. She had volunteered for Hospice and serves on the Stanton County Hospital Auxiliary. Diane has served on numerous boards for the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Church Women and the UMW District boards. Diane and Maxine Barber together started the first Party After Prom in 1990 that continues today. Diane, along with Don Hasty, started Stanton County Cooperative Ministries that refurbished a building on Main Street and created the StoreHouse. Diane has also renovated two other buildings on Main Street; one being the Emery’s Drug building into The Old Store and running a restaurant and soda fountain business in it for several years.
Chris and his wife, Dara have two children, Haley (husband Nathan) and Dylan and one grandson, Hogan. Jennifer has three sons, Jayden (wife Paige), Jarren and Jaxson.
Martie and Diane feel fortunate all of their kids and grandkids were all raised in Stanton County. Martie and Diane have always thought giving back to the community was important and are proud of Chris and Jennifer doing the same.
