"Paid medical leave is a policy that allows everyone to access the healthcare and recovery time they need. But trans people like me face daunting, often impossible, hurdles for basic medical care, a medical provider who understands our needs, a job that supports our ability to cover co-pays, and time off to heal. As a result, health care is out of reach for the majority of us.

"For the trans community, medical leave in the workplace allows us to secure medically necessary procedures and be well. "

We're here to thrive, not just survive, writes activist Bri Barnett.

When your employer doesn't think of you as human beings.

"Advertising the bodies of women employees was good for business. Though the “Fly Me” campaign is now displayed on a number of websites, often as a glaring example of outdated s*xism, at the time, “Fly Me” reflected the widespread s*xualization of flight attendants, which belied the harsh working conditions that these women negotiated while flying unfriendly skies. That began to change in the mid-1960s when flight attendants mounted an organized push against their employers—and ultimately, improved their workplaces."

In 1971, National Airlines introduced a new slogan: “Fly Me.”

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients are not just immigrants, they are also an important part of the U.S. workforce. The Center for Migration Studies reports that 81% to 88% of TPS recipients are working, predominately in construction, restaurants and other food industries, landscaping services, child day care services, and grocery stores. They are part of the American working class and an essential part of many local communities.

In recent weeks, President Trump has been warning of an “invasion” of a caravan of 3,000 Central Americans, mostly from Honduras, heading north towards the Mexico-U.S. border. In October, these imm…

Make no mistake about it. Such legislation would be transformative, removing an essential source of disciplining the labor force, freeing workers of the threat of unemployment, and providing them with labor rights that are all too scarce in today’s “precarious” workplace. How can we achieve full-employment legislation that is not watered down, that starts out with and holds onto a genuine, enforceable job guarantee?

Professional athletes’ unions haven’t always taken an active role in the mainstream labor movement, but some have committed to supporting other workers when their workplaces overlap.

This is the second article in a multi-part series on the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). We are exploring the history of the league and sports unionism; the gender wage gap in professional basketball; and how the players and their union, the WNBPA, are approaching collective bargai...
