**Courtesy Post**: Penelope is NOT an AHHS program animal. She is being shared to help her find a home, and placement will be handled directly with her current caretaker.

Penelope is a sweet, laid-back 10-year-old girl who weighs about 16 pounds. She’s an easygoing little dog who enjoys the simple things, especially belly rubs, relaxing with her people, and going for walks.

She gets along well with other dogs and cats and is good with children. Penelope is house-trained, excellent on a leash, and has always been an inside dog. She enjoys her walks but is just as happy relaxing at home afterward.

Penelope's owner sadly passed away, and her caretaker is now hoping to find her the best possible home. After losing the person she was closest to, we want to make sure Penelope finds someone who will love and care for her for the rest of her life.

As a senior, Penelope isn't looking for anything complicated. She would be a wonderful companion for someone who wants a small, mature dog who is sweet-natured, well-mannered, and happy to be by your side.

Penelope is spayed and microchipped. Unfortunately, her previous medical records were not transferred with her, so her medical history is limited.

Her caretaker will require veterinary references, and a home visit may be requested as part of the adoption process. They are simply being careful to make sure Penelope goes to a home where she will be loved and well cared for.

If you're interested in Penelope, please email [email protected] and she can put you in touch with her caretaker.

💕 Meet Sassy!

Sassy is a sweet, playful girl who loves a good game of tug-of-war just as much as she loves curling up in your lap for some well-deserved pets! Once she loves you, she really loves you, and she enjoys being close to her person. She is 3 years and 10 months old and is a small dog, weighing around 15 pounds.

Sassy gets along well with both dogs and cats. She is house-trained and does well on a leash. She can get especially excited when her person comes home and may have a little excitement piddle, but she’s otherwise a good girl in the house.

Sassy has been through a lot of change recently. She was adopted by her previous family in March 2023, but sadly, her owner has passed away. Her current caretaker is now hoping to find Sassy the best possible forever home, one where she will be loved, spoiled, and cherished for the rest of her life.

Sassy forms strong bonds with her people and was very attached to her owner. She tends to feel most comfortable with women and would do best with a female adopter who can give her patience, consistency, and time to feel secure in her new surroundings.

Sassy is not comfortable around children, so she will need an adult-only home. Her ideal family will understand her boundaries and allow her to settle in at her own pace.

Because Sassy has already experienced the loss of her beloved, her caretaker wants to be especially thoughtful in finding the right match. Veterinary references will be required, and a home visit may be requested as part of the adoption process. This isn't about making things difficult. It's about making sure Sassy's next home is truly her forever home. ❤️

Sassy is spayed and microchipped. Records will be transferred to new owner.

If you're looking for a loyal, playful companion who would love nothing more than to be your shadow, play some tug-of-war, and curl up in your lap, Sassy may be the girl you've been waiting for. 🐾💕

If interested, email [email protected] and she will put you in touch with her caretaker!

McSteamy wants to know WHY you haven't been to visit him and all his friends at the Appalachian Highlands Humane Society today?! 🧐
We are open today from 10AM-5PM. The weekend is the purrrfect time to adopt a new furry friend because it gives extra time to get to know one another before returning to the hustle and bustle of the workweek.
Can't adopt? Okay, we understand...but that doesn't mean you can't come get some kitten and puppy lovin'! We have plenty of animals that could use some enrichment today, too.
Come see us, you'll be glad ya did! We're located at 2101 W Walnut Street, Johnson City, TN 37604

🐾 Sometimes, seven tiny lives find their way to you just in time. 🐾

Today, seven little kittens came through our doors. We can't help but wonder how different their story might have been if they had been found even a little later.

These babies were discovered huddled beneath a porch, their tiny bodies covered in fleas and painfully malnourished. They were cold, weak, and desperately in need of help. There was no mother in sight, and with every passing day, their chances of making it on their own were becoming slimmer.

Thankfully, someone saw them. Someone stopped. And someone cared enough to bring them to us.

We're so grateful he did. ❤️

Because when these kittens arrived today, our team got to work immediately. One by one, we carefully bathed them, removed the fleas that were taking so much from their already fragile bodies, offered them nourishment, and wrapped them in warmth and comfort.

They are safe now.

But they aren't out of the woods yet.

For now, our biggest priority is getting these babies strong enough to thrive. We could really use donations of soft kitten food, microwavable heating discs, soft throw blankets, and other supplies to keep them warm and comfortable.

🍼 Soft kitten food
🔥 Microwavable heating discs
🧺 Soft throw blankets
❤️ Kitten care and comfort items

You can also find additional items our animals need on our Chewy Wishlist.
And then, when these little ones are stable and gaining weight, they'll need something just as important as food and warmth:

A foster home.

They need someone willing to open their home and give them the time, patience, and love they need to grow into happy, healthy kittens.

So please share this post. You never know who among your friends and family might be the person these babies have been waiting for.

Seven kittens were found beneath a porch today.

But because one person stopped to help, seven tiny lives have a chance.

And sometimes, that's what rescue is all about.
Finding them just in time. 🐾❤️

Russell is patiently waiting for his person to come along and take a seat beside him, promising to never leave him.. Could that be you?

He's a gentleman on a leash, gets along well with other dogs, and loves adventures consisting of car rides and pup cups! He's nervous by nature, but opens up and will even let you rub on his belly.

Russell has grown up here at the Humane Society and is so deserving of adoption. He is just over a year old and weighs around 60 pounds.

Read more about him on our website! Better yet, come visit him in person. 🐾
