Mary Alexander had the vision for what the Langston Centre is today going back 2002. She envisioned the Langston High School being a multicultural space. And, she was a historian, teaching at Northeast State College and East Tennessee State University. In fact, she completed her Master's thesis on the black history of Johnson City from 1869 to1965. And, Ms. Alexander was the first African American elected to the Washington County, Tennessee Board of Commissioners in 2002.

A letter. A teenager. A moment in history. ✍🏾⚾️
In 1947, Charles McConnell of Johnson City, Tennessee wrote to Jackie Robinson during his first season with the Brooklyn Dodgers — proof that history doesn’t just happen on the field, it lives in the hearts of those watching.
Stories like this remind us how far inspiration can travel.
