🎃No tricks. Just Care: Meet Silvia🍂

For Silvia, healthcare access means being able to get the care you need, when you need it; regardless of income, insurance status, language, or circumstances. It’s not just having a doctor available. It’s being able to actually reach that doctor and receive the care you need.

One barrier she wishes more people understood is just how difficult the healthcare system can be to navigate. Referrals, paperwork, eligibility requirements, transportation, language barriers, and simply knowing who to call can quickly become overwhelming. Sometimes people aren’t avoiding care, they just don’t know how to get through the system, or where to start.

Silvia also wants to bust the myth that people without insurance don’t have options. There are programs and organizations that can help connect people with medical care and resources. Sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing that help exists and where to find it. Her advice to patients? Ask questions. Follow up. Be your own advocate. If you don’t understand what happens next or you’re waiting on a referral, call and ask. You are not bothering anyone by asking about your healthcare. Your health is worth speaking up for.

That’s what "No Tricks. Just Access." means to Silvia. People deserve straightforward, compassionate care without judgment or unnecessary obstacles. When someone needs help, the focus should simply be on helping them get the care they need.

Breast cancer is a reminder of how important access to healthcare, early detection, and support can be. At AMPA, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to access the care they need because healthcare access matters at every step.

✨Access Starts Here: Meet Sara✨

For Sara, access means being able to get the care you need without having to choose between your healthcare and your basic needs. It means having the resources and support to take care of your health without sacrificing other necessities in life.

As Director of Programs, Sara gets to see all the puzzle pieces of AMPA’s work come together. Part of her role is making sure our processes and workflows help minimize barriers so patients can get connected to the care they need as quickly and smoothly as possible.

One of the biggest barriers she sees is navigating the healthcare system. When you're already dealing with a health concern, figuring out all the steps needed to get the right care can feel overwhelming. Sometimes so much that patients put off taking care of their health altogether.

What keeps Sara motivated is knowing that the work AMPA does makes a positive impact on the individuals we serve, their families, and our community. Hearing from patients about how AMPA helped connect them to care they may not have otherwise had is a reminder of why she loves what she does. For Sara, access starts with making healthcare a little easier to navigate and making sure people don't have to figure it all out alone.

On International Day of Respect, we’re reminded that every patient deserves compassion and respect, regardless of their circumstances. At AMPA, creating a welcoming, judgment free environment is an important part of helping people feel comfortable seeking the care they need.

✨Meet the Mission: Kathryn✨

Meet Kathryn, AMPA’s Referrals Team Lead and Office Manager. As one of the first points of contact for many of our patients, Kathryn knows that even a brief conversation can become a meaningful moment.

“A lot of people don't even know a program like this exists before our call and are so relieved and happy to know they may get access to the care they need.” She says there is something “strange but special” about crying with someone she’s never met over the phone because they are so thankful for the opportunity to receive care they never thought they would get.

Kathryn also sees how overwhelming healthcare can be and how important it is that patients don't have to navigate it alone. Whether it's helping explain next steps, connecting patients with providers, or working with community partners, she believes every part of the process plays a role in helping someone move forward.

Through her work at AMPA, Kathryn has learned that making a difference doesn't always require something extraordinary. “I'm not some superhero that can fix the world with the wave of a hand... but I am someone who can make the world a little better one day at a time.”

Today on Stand Up for Cancer Day, we’re standing up for a future where cancer is detected earlier, treated effectively, and no one faces barriers to the care they need. At AMPA, we see every day how important access to healthcare can be, and we believe that helping people reach the care they need is an important part of standing up to cancer.
